Yes they do.
Are you trying to tell me people DON'T turn up at the GP asking for antibiotics for a cold? YOU may not, that doesn't mean that a large number of people don't.
And I am afraid that the opinion that someone is totally naive and stupid because they don't have children of their own is entirely unreasonable.
I did not mention over the counter drugs either, or say you were paranoid or over protective, so I am unclear as to where this came from?
The wisdom of the world does not suddenly pop in to your head when you give birth, as alot of my friends with children are testament to.
Having children does not also make you more able to understand the evidence base behind something and make a decision.
I have said before that I understand and totally accept the reason why you don't give your child milk, so again, I am confused as to where this idea cam from.
So we are all agreed then, cow's milk is not a suitable drink for an under one? (you don't give your child cows milk so this isn't some sort of personal attack).
Cows milk isn't suitable for an under 1, no, not as a main drink.
Bored of this thread now - you are right.. you have a big thick textbook there
How can I, as a Mother, ever compete with a Textbook :cool:0 -
Advice is widely available and it is up to each of us to decide if we take it.
Once you are a parent you make judgements on what is best for your child. Every child is different and regardless of the information out there, we know what is best, as nobody knows your child better than you do.
Right it appears I will not be taken seriously (even though all I have done is repeat the NHS current guidelines) as I don't have children of my own.
Clearly people here think I am in no state to either do my job, or know what I would like to do when I have children.
Shame really as we are just starting to try for a baby and obviously I am unable to make any decisions for that future child, as I am not yet a mother.
A friend of mine told me that "breast feeding makes you fat" and she is a mother! So her wisdom didn't come with her child. When I tried to explain it was quite the opposite, she got confused. She had based her entire decision not to breast feed on that one (wrong) fact. So please don't tell me all mothers know everything about children, because they don't.
There is no point in stating my position of cows milk again (and it's hardly contraversial!). So there isn't much point in this discussion really.
Might go and try for a baby again, it will be much more fun. But then again, not sure I know how to do that properly as I am not a mother:p0 -

I don't have a textbook here at all, but I have actually researched the matter widely as part of 6 years at a redbrick uni and in my job.0 -
Well, I tried to follow the mothers manual, and threw it out the window after a fortnight.
The bit about solids? Not a chance, the poor lad was starving and had baby rice from about 6 weeks. My daughter wasn't much after that herself.
As for cows milk, yes, after 6 months they both had it, and not in small quantities either. They did still have the odd drink of formula, but they mainly had a good balanced diet that included cows milk.
Those 2 are now 15 and 10 respectively, and are both healthy, happy and incredibly tall children.
I gave up listening to conflicting advice from text books and well meaning health visitors. In the end I knew my own children and instinct was far more reliable.0 -

Exactly. And alot of Mothers are sick of people knocking on their doors bleating Government guidelines - which change, or don't apply up in Scotland?!
Clearly people here think I am in no state to either do my job, or know what I would like to do when I have children.
Your job is irrelevant and nobody can predict what you will be like when you have babies - you can't guarantee you will be ace at it just because you may have a degree and study about it.

No they don't, but touche.. don't try to bleat to Mothers who aren't as stupid and as ill informed as that. I was a size 6 due to Breastfeeding and like a Skeleton. I looked completely anorexic and everyone thought I had an eating disorder - had gorgeous big boobs though

Well enjoy
I haven't got the energy like I had.. before I became a Mother:cool:0 -
When I have children, they will be fed on breast milk until such a time when I decide to stop,
Great parenting isn't about doing things perfectly, it's about making the best of the hand you are dealt.↑ Things I wouldn't say to your face

I said that a mother knows her child best. A text book says one thing, a friend says another, a HV says this and so on, ultimately at the end of the day, you know what is best for your own child and none of the above advice given, may apply to your child.
I am not disputing your knowledge, nor am I patronising you for not yet being a mother. I never did....I just made a contribution to the thread.
I stick to my original post, that a mother knows her child better than anyone. There will always be new guide lines and advice to be given, research is constantly being updated but they are not facts set in stone. We are given 'the facts' and it is like anything else, we make our own decisions from the information given and do what is best for us.:happyhear We are not put on this earth for ourselves, but are placed here for each other.
If you are there always for others, then in time of need, someone will be there for you.

The very best of luck to you with that... sincerely. It's great that you have a plan and have considered how you would like things to go, but occasionally it doesn't work out that way, through no fault of anyone but Fate. If, for whatever reason, it's not possible for you to breast feed, then don't give yourself a hard time about it, will you?
Great parenting isn't about doing things perfectly, it's about making the best of the hand you are dealt.
I know that better than anyone, my own mother could not breast feed me, as she had such severe mastitis that she was hospitalised and was hallucinating, therefore I was bottle fed until age 1.0 -

When I had my first child, Government instructions were to place babies to sleep on their backs, which I duly did. By the time I had my second child, the Government had changed it's mind and we were told to place our babies to sleep on their stomachs. But my baby knew different and wouldn't sleep on his stomach, no matter what. But I didn't lose any sleep about it, after all, baby 1 was fine and dandy. By the time I get around to having babies 3 and 4, the Government were telling us that they had to sleep on their backs again.
I had my first baby in 1987 and my last in 2007... the changes in the 'advice' and recommendations' from official sources is staggering...↑ Things I wouldn't say to your face
