I am aiming to do a Parkrun one day, i cant wait.

Does anyone mind explaining what a pacemaker is? I was thinking it had something to do with having a heart attack :rotfl: I'm guessing that's not right!

Is it complicated to register and do all the paperwork etc for a Parkrun? I thought you just registered online and turned up?

At ours they had a number of people with yellow bibs on and a big number written on them. My lady with 35 on her bib was aiming to do the route in 35 minutes. If you stick with the person doing the pace you are aiming for they should be more experienced and able to keep you at a consistent pace - plus offer encouragement and any hints and tips along the way.
You register on the website and print out the barcode they give you, then you just turn up with the barcode and do the course. At the end they give you a sequentially numbered token as you cross the finish line then someone scans your token and the bar code (saves messing up the finish line with scanning) to assign your time. Later you get a text with your time and the results are posted online.

  • At ours they only have pacers occasionally usually if there's a running club doing all the volunteering as a recruitment drive kind of thing. They always remind everyone that they are not professional pacers but your pacer had the right idea and that you should aim for negative splits.

A pacemaker is a little electronic device that makes sure your heart maintains a steady electrical rhythm so you don't, well, die. My grandad's got one and needs a new battery soon I think.

Paperwork for parkrun is really easy. You do it all online and then you just have to make sure you bring your barcode on the day. You can print them off for free or you can pay for little plastic tokens, similar to the finish tokens you get at the end. I've even seen people with bracelets with their barcode on it which is a cool idea - might need to look into that.

I heartily recommend parkrun to anyone for the encouragement that you get.
Even as a "faster" runner people still help you round and some of the tips and training help you get is brilliant.

As a side note on a small parkrun like my local one with less than 100 runners the fastest time was 17 mins give or take and the slowest 53 mins. So it encompasses a wide range of abilities.

  • There are no parkruns here..something about 'volunteers' having to be paid which is against the way parkrun is operated.
Misty but muggy today. Trying to convince myself to get out but still tired having swum across a 1.5 km lake on Sunday on top of the rather warm hiking.. ..
New vivoactive keeps its battery life and is comfortable to wear. Some activities are easier to import into strava and change there. Now to work out why i am getting bigger with all this exercise! I ideally need to be 6kg lighter for my poor knees.

That's a shame as they are great motivation.

Its like a sauna here :( so think that I am going to have to wait till it gets dark to go for a run tonight. I'm fed up of running after work in the heat and then spending the next hour or so after having a shower sweating to death still.
I can't decide whether to go for a nice short and gentle 5k recovery run or whether to go a bit further.

  • As for the parkrun pacers, you could always post on your local parkrun facebook page and ask if they are doing a pacing event soon. Or post your target time and someone might be willing to pace you? If someone asked to be paced within my time range at my local parkrun, I'd likely jump at the chance. My local parkrun is a very motivational one (they probably all are!), and there's a few of us who regularly drag each other around the course - either for pb's or just when struggling etc. :)

Thanks WantToBeSE, the nice thing is that it didn't feel that bad on the last lap, and I still had enough energy left to do a full sprint to the line (its petty I know but I didn't want the person that caught me up to overtake)

Nice gentle 10 mile run today. Its hot out there again today! But managed to keep my heart rate average in the low 140's despite 1000 feet of hills in it.

Desperate to get some longer, hillier runs in before I race 15k on the 1st October.
