Just because someone runs a successful company, doesn't mean they actually know much about the law (unless the company they run is a law firm :P)
Your friend is talking out of his backside, there's no such thing as the trading standards act.

Also, you say you saw the sign but ignored it? You know how idiotic that is, yes? Do you think there's a prankster that goes around trying to stop people paying by card? Ooooh, hardcore.
If you saw the sign you had 3 options; ignore it, take heed, or query it if you're unsure. It's not the forecourt attendant's job to hold your hand like a child and explain something to you that was clearly displayed on the pump just in case you didn't understand it despite it's clarity.

Quite frankly, you chose to ignore a clear sign, kicked up a fuss like a child because you somehow think that a faulty card machine will discriminate between credit and debit cards, and then acted like a petulant git when you realised that YOU were in the wrong.
Rather than acting like a grown up and withdrawing cash from the ATM, paying and getting on with your day, you throw your toys out of the pram and blame everyone else for your lack of awareness and your abundance of ignorance.
If I was your mother, you'd have got a clip around the ear for your attitude. Poor woman must have been cringing.

In future, if you don't have the intelligence to read a simple sign, perhaps it's time you hung up your car keys and got a bus pass. But remember to read the timetable.

In fact, d'you know, you should probably just stay home. Society is not for you...

no the format refers to being laid out correctly. it was very scruffy, we did see the notice but as it did not appear to be genuine we took no notice.

Do they do bus timetables bigger than A4 size though? Also, the OP will have to watch out for those dastardly people who make fake timetables just to watch people get to the bus stop at the wrong time! :D

You might want to point out to your extremely knowledgeable friend that the act he is quoting from doesn't exist!

We have a friend of the family who is partially sighted and our local bus company has printed her a large copy of the timetable for her bus route into town. it is larger than A4 - but you need to ask for it.

yeah yeah whatever you are all like children. i spoke to my friend who is a very successful conservatory company, a big name in this part of the country. he has told me that the trading standards act requires the retailer to provide a "full list of payment methods in a recognised format at the point of sale". the petrol station did not provide this.

as for my mother i will call her what i want she is a lovely lady and did not deserve this treatment.

Can I suggest you consider selling your car and only using taxis at least then the is a likelihood of you not causing any more trouble.

Oh, sorry, that won't work, the taxis have all their signs in smaller than A4 as well.

PS: tell your friend he is a lying buffoon, Trading Standards Act, my ars.......

So the card machine stops working. They think "oh, we'd better let customers know before they get their petrol." What sort of sign do you expect them to get with no notice? They've done the best that they can, and did a good job of it since you obviously saw the signs!
I'd guess you're the one who barely speaks English, given that you can't read a "cash only" sign.

i am disgusted by the treatment me and my mother received at a shell petrol station today and i will now be boycotting them and told them i would be posting on this forum and i suggest you do the same.

my mum filled up her car at a shell petrol station and then we both went inside to pay for the petrol. when inside we told them the pump number and tried to pay using a debit card. the cashier said "sorry we are not able to take credit card payments at the moment because the systems are broken". i explained we were using a DEBIT card not a credit card but he got huffy and said they werent able to take any card at all and that there were notices on all the pumps. i told him there were not notices on the pumps so went out to check we hadn't missed something.

all that was on the pump was a printed sheet of a4 paper saying "sorry, cash payments only" hardly enough of a warning that they dont take cards. also how does a big company like shell simply not be able to take cards, makes no sense! i teld him the sign was not adequate and that they should be warning people before they fill up but he tried to argue saying there was a sign up again. he told us we could use the cash machine on the forecort to withdraw cash and pay that way so we did in the end but were not happy.

i will be boycotting there petrol stations from now on and so will my 62 year old mother.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Just by way of balance I today took my 121 year old mother into a shell garage and we were allowed to pay by credit card. To be fair there were no signs warning us of this but we took our chances and it all ended well.
