Hi all,
Thank you SO very much for all the help (Some more than others). Well I DEFINITELY can be '@rsed about it' but have had family matters to attend to over 200 miles away. I will post more details tomorrow.
I think some of the help on here has been brilliant. I am very grateful.
That's good, at least we can get to the crux of the issue if you're directly contributing, cos everyone else is at everyone else's throats, and second guessing everything.
Hopefully we can help you get this sorted. Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

OK, thanks to you all!! So here is how it is as far as I can remember (I sold it over 9 months ago):
I sold my car to my friend who owns a garage so is in the trade. He kept the V5 and I had a yellow slip to send off. I did send this yellow slip off. He did not receive a new V5 because traders do not, they keep the V5 from the owner. Then earlier this year I received the letter from those lovely people at Rossendales....
PS- BigJockKnew- why do people like you post 'advice' like 'cough up'? It doesn't help matters and usually just winds people up. Very odd indeed.0 -

You must have problems if your that easily wound up.
When did the tax run out on the car and when was it sold?

It could be said the OP is winding BJK up to (and other readers) after a while you pick up on the drip feeding, at the end of the day having an 'it aint my problem' with the OP's attitude to sending the form off and not chasing up the receipt, does not leave much to sympathise about. Yes some of us could have ignored the thread after reading it, but we all know when something goes wrong, it is not always somebody else's fault. He could have done more but chose not to, then whining about people winding him up?
Just because answers are not wrapped in cotton wool does not make them invalid.
It's time he put pen to paper and explain the situation to the DVLA, it's no point sticking his head in the sand now, the process has started so he has to see it through until conclusion, whether it be in his favour or not.0 -

Absolutely BRILLIANT, Bazster. That did make me laugh!!
Sigh....to answer DUTR and BJK, you do both seem to have a habit of jumping the gun. Remember, assumption is the mother of all c**k ups. To clarify, I was not 'wound up', I stated 'usually just winds people up', I did not mean me. Do not assume.
Anyway, back to the thread and the wonderful people who have posted on here to try and help me. Thank you all, it is really appreciated, I mean that.
I shall post the letter to the DVLA today, thank you for verifying that I have included all that I need to.
I have written a similar letter to Rossendales and was due to send that to explain the situation. Should I just avoid contact with these people and stick to just the DVLA?
Regarding when the tax disc ran out, I am unable to help there as it was over 9 months ago when I sold it. However, I shall get hold of my friend who purchased it and try to find out.
I am intrigued as to how this will end.
Thank you (almost) all for the help. What a great site this really is!!0 -

Up to you what you do about Rossendales, but there's no harm in ignoring them.
If DVLA continue to be !!!!!! about it then you are entitled to complain to your MP.Je suis Charlie.0 -

I hope you are correct, I'm not sure why he cannot ignore both parties?
Although he has been chomping off heads, he did include " I'm 90% sure I sent off the slip to notify them of a change of ownership but, from what I can work out" So that leaves 10% probability that the slip may not have been posted.0
