Rossendales/DVLA want £80 for odd debt?

And how are you working that out then? The OP hasn't actually said that! And these debt collectors also collect for the scum of the private parking industry, have you ever tried resolving something with them when they don't give a toss and only speak give us your card details! And basically will tell any lies to get those details.
Do you have comprehension problems?
Unless the OP sold the car at 23:59 on the final day of live tax then the OP sold a car without tax and already off the road.
The OP asks this:Should my friend have notified them that the car was SORN as soon as he received it?
Which means that at the moment of sale the car was already off the road..........it should have already been declared SORN..........
Not difficult really, if you don't get this then it seems I can't reduce my explanation to a level that you will understandWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I do not like the tone of Rossendales' letters mentioning the possibility of goods being removed from my property or an order to instruct my employer to deduct the amount from my salary. Please stop them sending me threatening letters.0

My comprehension is fine, but you fail to realise that the OP has not confirmed what happened to the car prior to selling, so you are making assumptions based on nothing! And if the car was sold and the tax became due after that date then its got sod all to do with the OP!
So lets just wait to see what comes back when the OP returns, I know somebody like you has problems with waiting, I don't as I have learned over the years not to judge people, and not make assumptions when it could fly in your face! When posting a parking issue on MSE do not reveal any information that may enable PPCs to identify you. They DO monitor the forum.
We don't need the following to help you.
Name, Address, PCN Number, Exact Date Of Incident, Date On Invoice, Reg Number, Vehicle Picture, The Time You Entered & Left Car Park, Or The Amount of Time You Overstayed.

The OP appears to have done nothing wrong and as I said above, the DVLA play this game all the time due to what seems to be failures in their own office systems in many cases. And if these cases get to a hearing, the defendants who turn up, have reported a routine win within 5 minutes with others going in afterwards like a conveyor belt of cases to waste the court's time. I stand by what I said before, the OP should state their position, they owe nothing and Rossendales are NOT acting under any court order so that's a bog standard debt collector letter, not a pre-bailiff visit letter (can't happen before court).PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

If the OP only sent a slip and not the completed page of the V5C, it could explain the problem.
£80 sounds like a claim for the Late Licensing Penalty (s.7A, Vehicles Excise & Registration Act 1994), which is treated as a civil debt - hence the debt collectors.0 -
Yep, hence the pointless letters from pointless Rossendales who we tell people on here to ignore. However this does need a rebuttal to the DVLA.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

But if the OP didn't send the correct document, he would still be shown as the registered keeper and so would be liable for the debt.0

He says he sent the slip off, so he sent it off. There's no suggestion from the OP that he sent the wrong form is there?PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

It depends what the OP meant in post 1 "I sent off the slip"
If you sell to the trade, you send the slip from page 2 of the V5C to the DVLA, if you sell privately (as the OP did) you send the completed whole completed page 1.
If the OP sent the wrong part, he could still be shown as the registered keeper and why the DVLA are claiming the penalty.0
