Yes it is, but it is worse than that.
Here is a criticism of peer review, existentially it is a closed system, self regulation the kind of regulation that in effect is no regulation.
Bit hard to read but in short peer review leaves a lot to be desired.
This is a key paragraph
"But we know that the system of peer review is biased, unjust, unaccountable, incomplete, easily fixed, often insulting, usually ignorant, occasionally foolish, and frequently wrong."
Problem is it is done behind closed doors.
That is always a big problem.
Interesting! It looks like ignorance masquerading as healthy skepticism and I have to say the inclusion of the term "sociologists of science" should give us all pause for thought. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

Chameleon, what made you change your mind after this post:
?
Because I hate to give up on someone that I can see needs help. But it's become rather apparent that I truly am wasting my time. I'll just let her get on with it from now on, unless she actually asks for any specific advice and is willing to listen.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
From what the OP said earlier on, shes eaten a quarter of the meal posted. It was suggested earlier on that the meal could be cut into 4 or 6 portions.
Shes had one quarter so far. As for saying later, later could be tomorrow.
I understand that the OP has been struggling with her weight for quite some time, but unless she posts the calorie count up (and Im well aware that some folks dont like cal counting), no one is going to know exactly what shes consumed.
Shes said from the beginning of the thread that shes logging every calorie and thats what she thinks is going to work for her.
I think if she said earlier, I had the lot then people could be concerned, a quarter isnt excessive and the toppings look healthy.
If people are cheating, the only people they are cheating is themselves, if they are going into it half hearted then they will probably slip up.
It took me years to sort out my attitude to food and my diet, if the OP genuinely wants to sort her diet out, she'll do it.0 -
There are days where I struggle, for reasons I wont go into on here, Im sure we all have our good days and bad days.
I think this should be a place where people can offload even if they are making a few mistakes along the way, because going from what a few people have said to date, there are many of us who would benefit from a bit of a sound off when it gets a bit tough.
Me, I find it tough after years of cal counting or just being obsessed with food to be able to see what I eat as a normal days food. I also want to eventually get to a stage where I dont see food as weight gain or even weight related. Just to be able to get up, cook, eat and not worry about it.
I used to do that, in my teens, never worried what I ate, ate when I was hungry and my weight was neither up nor down, wasnt until my 20s that I put a lot of weight on and spent a long time losing and gaining.
Hopefully when the next few kilos come off and Im at a weight I want to maintain, I'll just be able to do that and get on with it.0 -

When you were overweight, what made you lose weight and successfully keep it off?Dear Lord, I am calling upon you today for your divine guidance and help. You do know there's almost 600 kcal in half a sheet of just-rol puff pastry alone, before you add any toppings?
The recommended portion size is 50g so that's approx a sixth of a sheet. I really don't know what to say if you're telling me you're eating half of that in one day
If I do and it fits in my calories what's the problem? It saves my OH having to make something laterIts great. Hard work, but I always feel much better after Ive done it.
I bet!0 -
When you were overweight, what made you lose weight and successfully keep it off?
By completely changing my attitude towards food and adopting a much healthier lifestyle. In my previous career my eating habits were awful as I often didn't have time to eat whilst on call so ended up grabbing food on the run which wasn't always the healthiest option. I also ate huge meals late at night, washed down with a bottle of wine!
Having family members who were already in the fitness industry I decided to re-educate myself about food, nutrition and human health by doing a post-grad degree to become a nutritionist. I threw the NHS/Government guidelines out of the window, reduced portion sizes, increased fat and protein and cut out as much sugar as possible. I also workout regularly, doing a variety of cardio, HIIT, weights etc and more recently started power-lifting which is having an incredibly positive impact on my strength and body shape.
It's not easy staying in shape, I know that, especially for a woman of my age approaching menopause. I have a huge battle with hormones to contend with (which have a major impact on metabolism and fat storage) as well as a mental health illness for which I take medication which can actually cause weight gain. So yeah, I know what it's like to battle the demons.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

Was there something in particular, which made you start to change your eating habits and attitude to food?
How long had you struggled with your weight, before then?Dear Lord, I am calling upon you today for your divine guidance and help.
