Bangernomics luxobarge

They are referring to the crankshaft pulley. As with a lot of manufacturers they use this to help damp out vibrations in the engine and frankly, Hyundai made a mess of it. Lots of their bigger engines suffer terminal failures when they get into their middle age when this pulley breaks up or literally falls off wrecking the timing end of the engine.
A nice, expensive job done for you.0 -
Ah marvelous, yeah it was about £250 on the receipt, not horrifically expensive but pretty bad. They are referring to the crankshaft pulley. I suppose, aside from the arches, the first, well only job is the air con and autobox fluid. Hopefully a new pollen filter and regas will be all it needs but I'm not hopeful. Also not sure about that weird fan thing - it just cuts out when on max blower setting.0 -
So jobs to do when I've time:
Get an air con specialist to look at it
Change the ATF (may do it myself, doesn't sound difficult)
Just ordered a pollen filter and air filter so stick those in
Get a quote for the arches and make a decision about that
And that's about it I think!
Has decent tyres probably about half worn, and even - michelins on the front and hankooks on the back. I take that as a sign its been looked after in general. Spare is barely legal but will do as a spare, better than wasting a brand new tyre in the boot. Full size too.0 -
If it's a luxobarge, why are you bothering about the cosmetics (if you can't do it yourself) and the ATF? They can both be done quite easily by the driveway messer with few encouragements over the youtube guides.0

Yeah you're right. But if the arches are only like £50 or something I may as well.If it's a luxobarge, why are you bothering about the cosmetics (if you can't do it yourself) and the ATF? They can both be done quite easily by the driveway messer with few encouragements over the youtube guides.
I will do the ATF myself, it looks dead easy on this car. Old school autobox so just a case of undoing the drain plug and refilling, none of this sealed for life nonsense. Fluid isn't cheap though, about £60!
Got her booked in for an oil change and aircon regas tomorrow. The oil isn't quite as clean as I'd like so I am not entirely convinced the seller changed it in Jan as he said, may as well do it, not expensive.
Will see how the regas goes, if that fixes it fantastic. The revs dip and the pump comes on when the button is pressed so I hope so.
The weird fan issue...from reading the forums it sounds like it could be either the fan switch or the blower motor resistor. Neither are expensive parts and are easily accessible, the switch may just have a dodgy connection, so I'll investigate that.0 -
Aircon is dead. Garage discovered that the pump had purposely been disconnected so reconnected it only to have it start smoking, so the pump/compressor is seized. That sounds expensive. Someone was selling the secondhand part on ebay for about £50, but I wonder how much fitting would be....
Oil change done, HOWEVER, they put 5W30 fully synth in it. My service book says 5W30 is only good up to 10 or 20C, 10W40 is the usual for all temperatures. Called garage back to ask what was going on, they said 5W30 was what their book/computer said, and that because its fully synth its ok. My manual says nothing about syntheticness.
I am inclined to believe them, I think they're trustworthy and local cab drivers rave about them, however....
Still loving wafting about in the thing though.

As well as the compressor you would need some one to degas and purge the system and then might still find another a/c fault. Fitting is easy, if you've changed an alternator, you can change an a/c compressor, it will be neutral pressure now anyway so no nasty gases will flood out. On such a beast I'd leave the belt disconnected and open the windows instead.
Incidentally, 5W30 Fully synth is just about all I use nowadays, from Jags and Beemers it will just as nicely go into a Fiesta too.0 -
According to the current bangernomics guidelines:
In event of air conditioning failure:
- Consider regassing if that will solve it, failing that -
- Open the sunroof
In event of sunroof failure or vehicle not being so equipped.
- Open the window
In event of the windows not opening.
- Remove clothes until a suitable temperature is reached.
Never replace anything that you don't positively need, particularly if you have to pay someone to do it.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Aircon specialist has got back to me and basically told me not to bother because will cost a million pounds, so I shall indeed resort to this! Does indeed have an electric sunroof.According to the current bangernomics guidelines:

In other news, I've found a few cool features it has:
Ignition keyhole LIGHTS UP so you can see it.
Electric windows (and I presume sunroof) continue working 30 secs after the engine is turned off in case you've forgotten to close them.
If you leave the headlamps on, instead of sounding an annoying alarm when you open the door to tell you, it simply turns them off for you! Marvelous!
Oh and the cruise control, as well as the normal steering wheel controls, has a kinda master button on the dashboard you have to press first in order to use cruise at all. Bizarre.0
