My son had a 51 plate 3 litre S type for about 12 months, it put the EML on a couple of times but the dealer he bought it from fixed it each time, the brakes needed overhaul but the parts were not expensive and as far as i know they are quite straightforward.
    I liked it.

He sold it because it didnt have enough oomph for its considerable thirst, i think he got about a grand on trade in for a £4k car.

Check the tyre sizes on this or any Jag, if its on 18", then even ditchfinder makes are around £120 a pop and proper tyres upwards of £150 apiece, remember that applies to any Luxobarge on 18" or larger..
Compare to tyres on the H6 Outback i mentioned, 215/60 x 16s, good quality @ £80 apiece maximum.

We have one of those H6's by the way, a seriously good car and a pleasure to work on, and surprisingly reasonable on insurance, but then i'm an old hector.

edit...its on 16", new battery, hmm it might be worth a good look over and especially under.

Hmm. I'm just surprised he refused the cash I had there and then!

There's another similar one going through BCA today. Anyone know what the MOT situation is there? Nothing is mentioned on the listing.

At the money you have to spend, a facelift on a plate 2-3 years newer, auto and in a good colour, with T&T is easily within your grasp from a private seller. Don't buy a money pit from an auction!

The dealer does sound trustworthy (well, for a dealer) and he's just round the corner so if anything goes wrong I won't have to tow it to Cornwall.

I would get confirmation before purchase of what the dealer believes his obligations are relating to problems after purchase, and what he is prepared to stand over.

Very few traders will be supplying a warranty on such an old car, so make sure you are clear before you buy.

    +1

    I'd a 2003 2.5 and it was a beautiful car.

If i was buying a 1999 example, i'd rather buy one privately for £800 rather than from a trader at over £1000 - seems a lot for that year of car.

Yep, will do. I asked about warranty and he just said 'you can buy one,' so I guess that's a non starter!

Those subaru H6s do look nice, just not many in budget remotely nearby! If I had one of those I'd have to get into off roading. :p

What about a hyundai sonata V6? Any good? Cheap enough and not quite totally wacky like the XG30. Just a little small and slow...

I like Sonata, a lot, even the 2.4 is a decent motor, the problem with the V6 is that if regd after march 06 you'll be in £480 VED band.

Nono I'm talking the older one, like up to 03. Very very cheap! Just a bit small and maybe slow...

"Just a bit small and maybe slow... ", a phrase I've never heard from a car enthusiast seriously looking for a car.
