S'ok, all sorted now. Got a reasonable price for insurance by tweaking a bit. I say reasonable but its still 4 figures, although I paid almost £900 for my previous car, a measly 1.6, so most of the premium I assume is basically for living in a rough area of Manchester rather than for driving something half decent.

If I'm struggling to insure an S type do you really think an XJ would be any easier?!

Honestly yes. And quotes are free. But who are you trying?

I have looked before but not recently. Just the comparison sites with extensive fiddling. I have previously tried every broker under the sun but they usually won't touch me due to my age and where I live.

Even my current broker who is usually excellent couldn't get anyone to cover an S type.

EDIT: yep, more than an S type. I know exactly what you were thinking but alas not. :(

Drifting away from topic slightly, but insurance bands aren't the absolute when it comes to insurance. I've had jags since I was a boy, but when I got my first 944, my current insurer wouldn't even quote.
    Shop around.

Can someone give me a realistic viewpoint here. Is this 99 jag going to bankrupt me? I can stomach £600 or so over a year but but my wife would be furious if it cost me £500 next week immediately after buying it.

I know the anti roll bar thingies (and possibly bushes on the back) may need doing soon (they've been an MOT advisory 'slight play') for the past 2 MOTs but read that this is a common and inexpensive fix.
  • Father Henry, (you've been promoted and are now a good Catholic), no one can tell you if the Jag will fall to bits or not, its not the make or model with any car its the previous ownership.

Some people maintain their vehicles well and some neglect them, some go as far as to flog them when somethings about to go bang, where others can't help but do the decent thing.

There's two rules i follow when looking at cars.

    1. the seller, if it quacks and waddles its a duck, in other words if it sounds and looks like a wide boy it is a wide boy, walk away.

    2. tyres and wheels, if its shod on damaged kerbed scabby cheap ditchfinder rubbish then you can be damned certain the previous owner cared even less about the parts that can't be seen...look through the wheels, are the discs scored deeply ridged manky looking things riddled in heavy rust together with the calipers? = neglect, walk away.

if the owner and car pass first scrutiny then i progress further.

Why thank you sir. The dealer does sound trustworthy (well, for a dealer) and he's just round the corner so if anything goes wrong I won't have to tow it to Cornwall.

And it has been looked after. Having looked at it again I think the roll bar/bushes/whatever have been done as they suddenly stopped appearing on the MOT, to be replaced by a wheel bearing which may or may not have been done.

Anyway - dealer isn't budging on price really, which is a shame. He has it up at £1300, FSH, but I know he's had it for a month and has dropped the price steadily from £2k. Says it owes him £1150...hmmm...is that believable?

No, it's not believable. No trader would have bought it in at all, it's an auction cheapy or a trade-in. If its on 17 inch tyres, have a look at the price of even budget ones, equally, check out the price of the complete front wheel bearing. Add to that the bundle of electrical goodies it has, price up a battery too.
You might get lucky, but they are expensive beasts to run in their middle age if your paying retail.

As I thought. I offered him a bit less, cash, there and then but he turned it down and seemed offended! No silly tyres, on the standard 16 inch ones. Battery is quite new and sound. Hmmm...

Bit of a waiting game, I offered him my number in the hope that he would change his mind but he wasn't interested.
