The thing with the Merc 320 Diesel is it is boring, it starts every morning, it never brakes down, on full throttle it eats most performance petrol cars for breakfast, but it is so quiet and so smooth and predictable you miss the excitement of trips to the garage and driving courtesy cars.
It can be re-mapped for around £100 in to a six second 0-60 165 mph monster as MET police did for motorway cars and it will still average 40 mpg, on the motorway point to point at 75MPH it will do 55-58 MPG.

It can have its fun, when some chump in his BMW or Audi pulls up along side the old mans Merc and then wonders where it vanished to....Gone is the answer.
    Be happy...;)

Lol, I had two - hence my username.

    A 2003, and a 2007 (facelift) one.

My next one, I decided to lease and get new, so I had to downgrade engine-wise and now in a E220 CDi, still not bad, though.

    A PCO driver who's had 3, I don't think there's a much better endorsement than that!

I do like the sound of that spacey! :D

However I'm looking at the W210 model and most of the ones I've seen in budget are rusty, which Honest John says is the main problem.

My insurance broker's going to love this, 'here is a shortlist of 10 vehicles, please tell me which ones are cheap insurance'. :p

Well I've been searching on ebay just for automatic cars under £2k on ebay, nearest first and seeing what comes up, and S types do keep cropping up - mostly early 3.0 V6s. Faster than anything else I've been looking at so far too and the insurance isn't bad. They're just a bit thirstier than others.

I suspect as I live in a rough area the bulk of my premium is basically as rough area tax, and the actual car doesn't matter too much...

Might start advertising current wheels this week, just speculatively to gauge interest/price...

There’s your real failure. If you were really into bangernomics there is no way you would be looking for another car whilst the one you have now is capable of being sold other than for scrap.

His is a very basic spec manual. It would have to be a connoisseur SE auto for me to be tempted...

And the diesel which is obviously the best is too slow for me. The KV6 I am wary of, the cambelt costs a fortune for a start...

Cambelts are only about £500 at most every 6 years / 60k miles. Find one that's been done if you're golden, or get a local place to do it. Fuel economy (on the manual at least isn't too bad - I averaged 26mpg no matter how I drove it).

If you're thinking rover 75, go back a bit. I've had a couple of 827's in the dim and distant past.

Or you could look for the 825's, or perhaps a vitesse?

Yeah that would be the way to go wouldn't it. If one comes up nearby I'll take a look, would have to be top spec estate conny though...

Hmm! The coupes are lovely looking! That one has been for sale for ages! Aforementioned friend sent it to me about a month ago, shame about the ridiculous alloys, they're hideous...

Well I went to look at an S type today, it was just round the corner from my house.

    Very nice indeed, I like!

Insurance broker said a flat no though, which means I'm back to the comparison sites which are quoting a bit more than I had hoped. :( hmmm...

Put my current car up for sale too, so I'll see if anyone bites.

Well, my car has just been sold, rather surprisingly! So I could do with something soon! Insurance is still proving a bit of a problem though. :S
