Who is the Breadwinner?

I think what people are saying is that your poll is useless because in this day and age it isn't a two horse race -some couples earn the same ....and at certain points any of those three data points can apply as the earnings of both of the couples can "change position".
A survey doesn't need to cover every situation but is worse than useless if one of the three major demographics is ignored deliberately to manipulate the results.
Daisy -I do think your situation is one discussed before it happens.
My parents were always equal earners but when I was born my Mum stayed home so effectively had no income (apart from £1 or something like that) child support. My parents went the joint account route -which worked for them as either of them could "treat" themselves without asking or any comment made but they always discussed the big purchases first.......suited them- wouldn;t suit everyone. Would a transfer from the main family account to your account equal to what you earn now work better as an effective SAHM "wage" or would a joint account work for you?
Maybe just a rework of the finances and an agreement that you both have a "me " account for treats, cosmetics, clothes -presents etc and all daily need stuff comes out of a household account that covers bills, kids clothes petrol , food etc.
No right answer as we're all different but I do think its something to be discussed ahead of time rather than when baby hormones and sleepless nights have arrived and logic isn't always aboundingI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I like to think of myself as pretty liberal and modern, but I am sure I would feel bad if the Wife was earning more than the Husband. But then I guess it would depend on how much more. A few thousand isn't a big difference but when it is getting on five or even twenty thousand, it's pretty hard going
I guess it's because I would not be used to it, especially growing up in a "traditional" family.
Discuss.

We have a six figure income and my wife earns over 80% of it. Neither of us find it awkward.0 -

This has to clearly be the winner of the most ridiculous, ill-informed post ever :T:T
Also, the poll is ridiculous :eek:Turn your car around.0 -

Are you actually saying that it's better if the "husband" earns more than the "wife"?0 -
Lol this thread.

When we first got married my husband earned considerably more because I was a PhD student earning peanuts. I now earn about £10k a year more, but after student loan and pension deductions, childcare vouchers and contributions to the company share incentive plan our take-home pay is about the same.
However, hubby's pay won't increase much more than it is now, whereas I hope mine will go up considerably over the years to come.0 -

Absolutely. I have a 6-figure income myself and my fiance earns around 2/3 of my salary. I'm female btw. At the moment I earn more and if we have a baby, it will be him at home looking after him/her as that's what makes financial sense.
Neither of us has a problem with it - why would we?
Most stupid poll I've seen in a long time.Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one.

Boyfriend earns about 7k more than more, I've never even thought about it. He's not the breadwinner, I thought the breadwinner was more a term when one worked an the other didn't.
This thread is ridiculously dated.0 -
I have a breadmaker, does that count?? Although OH bought it for me, so maybe that still makes him the breadwinner?
Still laughing at this being 'liberal and modern':rotfl:.0 -

But why on earth is it "better" is the man earns more than the woman?
Couple 1 - Husband earns £30k. Wife earns £80k.
Couple 2 - Husband earns £30k. Wife earns £10k.
Beats me why you assume that couple 2 is in some way "better" just because the pesky wife isn't making hubby feel bad.
OH and I are both the "breadwinners", although OH won't bring home the bacon because it's not kosher....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
