Do you have an aldi or lidl or farmfoods near you? Eggs will be a better price in there I would think, and also cheese.

I would agree with LameWolf - if you get a referral, promise yourself that when you can afford it you will donate the equivalent back to the foodbank. Call it an advance on what you will be donating ;)

Good luck with your GP - maybe think about writing a list of things to discuss?

Eggs are a brilliant idea, you can do so much with eggs.
You can get a pack of 15 in Farmfoods for £1

There are some foodbanks that churches run that you may not need a referral for.

Do you have a home bargains near you, very cheap shop, also B and M and wilkinsons.

Make sure that your ex wont continue to receive your child tax credits and child benefit.
  • Here are a few ideas for you

    1xstring spaghetti
You can make a nice meal by just boiling the spaghetti with 2 oxo cubes and a knob of butter and a sprinkling of pepper.

1xpasta twists Add sweetcorn, chopped burgers and a tin of baked beans with a little grated cheese if you buy any.
You can also make a milk pudding using the pasta and add a little jam to taste

4 tins of spagghetti the kids shaped one
    2 tins of beans
    few biscuits
    sugar
    jam
    oxo cubes
    gravy granules

fridge well nothing except milk and butter and some fruit

    freezer

    half bagof oven chips
    4 chicken drummers
1 box burgers + chop them up and add to pasta and you can also make a casserole out of them.

3 fish fingers = This is what I used to do this when we were skint
    Fish finger pie

Put a layer of chopped up fish fingers in a pie dish, top with beans or tinned spaghetti then a layer of mash with a little grated cheese on top bung in the oven until golden and bubbling (about 15 to 20 mins on 170c)

and about 7 corn on the cobs Take the corn off of the cob and add to a casserole or to pasta

Look at these threads they have lots of cheap ideas

  • Make sure the work HR person has all your personal details (esp bank account) down correctly in their system- you don't want any delays.

As stated before, contact the Council Tax dept and inform them of your single occupant status to ensure you get the discount. You should also check the status of your account in case there are arrears- this is a priority bill once your salary comes in.

You've been left in a desperate situation- that is what Food Banks and Women's Refuges are for. When you're back on your feet you can donate back to them and help someone else in future.

    Hi there,

sorry is this has already been posted - do you have any clubcard vouchers or other points eg. nectar, boots to buy any food, milk etc with. Any little savings accounts or piggy banks for the children (you can pay them back later)?

if I think of anything else, will post again.

Food banks etc are there for people in situations like yours - do not feel bad about using them in a crisis - you are being strong and sensible and looking after your family and as others said you can make a donation (could be time rather than money) later.

Sorry can't remember full thread but is there anyone you can confide in at work or a neighbour and "borrow" a couple of tins, some basic toiletries or whatever to help out. Again you can pay them back at some future date. I would happy to help someone down my road for example if they were desperate. I know its difficult but you have nothing to be ashamed of.

good luck, you can do it

You could try asking on freecycle, just remember to pay it forward when you are in a position to do so. Karma has a habit of biting you on the rear if you don't!

You must not feel ashamed about the situation you are in. I suspect you put up with an awful lot to try to stay together for your son. I know I did because I wanted my children to have a normal family life, but looking back now it was far from "normal" and not what I wanted them to grow up with. It's not easy but it's better than the alternative.

Make sure that you eat (even if it's only toast, my favourite emergency food) and look at the basics/smartprice brands (always on the bottom shelf so you don't see them easily!). Vegetable soup is another big favourite here too.

Accept whatever help you can get and think about the future you are going to build for you and your son. Good luck and let us know how it's going x
