Tesco Clubcard Fuel Save - new way to save on fuel or a gimmick????

Hello All,

I just received a letter from Tesco clubcard, informing me of there clubcard fuelsave which allows you up to 20p a litre off tesco fuel.

Tesco say "the more you shop, the more money you save on fuel".

Until the 30th September 2014, every £50.00 spent on Tesco weekly shop, you will get 2p off a litre of fuel for your vehicle. For big spenders in tesco, you can get as much as 20p off a litre of fuel.

A gimmick or a nice little earner for tesco customers???????

Its a game of two halves, if someoe spends £50+ (we do as a family of 4), then the 2p litre is a bonus to us.

For us its a nice earner.

Just how Tesco operate: their fuel is always 2p a litre more at supermarkets than normal petrol stations, so you have to spend £50 to get fuel the same price anyway.

Moneysaving tip: have 2 baskets, run all the BOGOF ,"half price" and Tesco value stuff through in one, and all the overpriced staples like bread through separately to get the refund

Really? They're always the cheapest around here by at least a penny.

That said, even on a 70 litre tank, 2p per litre saving is only £1.40 even if you drive in on fumes and drive out full. A saving's a saving, but that's hardly worth increasing your spend to get (which is what they're counting on)

I mainly shop at Asda and Sainsburys. For me Tesco is a top up. It important to see the cost of fuel as to weather your getting a god deal though

Joe Horner's got it. Give them £50 for your shopping, they give you 2p off per litre. Fill up from empty, with his 70 litres, will save you £1.40. Say £130.9 per litre - that's £91.63. Take off the 2p per litre and it's £90.23.
You drive away with a full tank of petrol and £50 of groceries, leaving Tesco with £140.23.
Profit on petrol for filling stations is pretty poor anyway, but they'll have made plenty on you with the grocery shop you just did...
Blindly doing this deal doesn't take account of the cost of the groceries, or the cost of the fuel, at any other outlets.

I've ranted before about Tesco petrol, and in my area it is always the most expensive supermarket fuel station within a 5 mile radius. Last year they had their 5p a litre offer running, yet the ASDA garage 4 miles away was actually 6p a litre cheaper anyway. Might as well have said "save 6p a litre on fuel - go to Asda." They always put their price up shortly before the fuel offers come in. I suppose the benefit of the offer at the top is that it is a longer term thing so there may be less chance of them putting up prices before offering to help you save money. (??? probably not)

The promotion runs from now until September so you can save up your points and then get 20p off a litre which is more of a saving. If you shop there anyway then I think it's a good deal - we will spend £500 between now and September and will use the money off fuel when we go on holiday in the summer.

In my area Tesco is the cheapest for petrol. I think it gives a small bonus if you are going to spend £50+ in the supermarket anyway. However I also don't think you can save up your points for long as the post above suggests. Read the conditions which, like most Tesco offers, are organised in such a way as to cause aggravation.

Hmmm that made me read the whole leaflet I had and you're right, once you have "earned' your fuel savings they have to be spent by the end of the following month or they expire. Not such a good offer as I thought then! But as we shop there anyway then anything is better than nothing I suppose!

The Tesco nearest me is always equal or 1p dearer than the cheapest, but one not too far away is the cheapest.

Unlike with the vouchers offering £3 off a £50 spend, you don't have to spend £50 at once to get the discount. Your card adds up purchases, then offers 2p off for every £50 accumulated. However, the discount is only valid to the end of the month following that in which you reach targets.
