Tsb plus account 5%

I am currently living off savings with no earned or benefit income having chosen to do unpaid voluntary work for the timebeing. Wanted to improve my returns by taking out a Classic Plus account to get the 5% interest on £2,000. Am quite capable of making monthly deposits of £500 from other savings. Since this is the only operating requirement and if I don't make the deposit it's my loss as I wouldn't get the interest there is no risk to the bank but they have tuned me down. Although they would let me have the ordinary Classic account (which of course is of no interest to me as it does have the interest).
Very helpful and pleasant staff in the complaints department but the decision by the relevant department appears completely illogical (think it was the lending department which in itself is daft as I am not asking for a loan or overdraft!).
TSB - the bank that likes to say no! Not so different after all.

Yes, just use your existing log in details again.

Thanks, tried this but it just says my User ID is already in use, it won't recognise it as mine. I did try logging in and doing it from the online banking but got the same error as I have done in the past
Thanks0 -
There's a significant difference between being able to comply with the basic interest-earning requirements and being able to satisfy their credit risk based criteria for opening an account in the first place! As others have pointed out, with Classic Plus they're trying to attract genuine current account customers rather than savers and unfortunately your declared circumstances will have made it pretty clear which camp you fall into.
They say (or used to) during the application that the purpose of account answer is not used to to assess eligibility.0 -

I think OH had a similar problem.
From memory, he put in new details but never used them.
The 2nd account appeared under his old log in, then he rang them and explained the problem.
If it doesn't appear like that, ring them afterwards and ask them to merge the 2 accounts.0 -

One possibility is that they are not recognising the 2 accounts as the same person:
did you use exactly same name/initials etc?
exactly same addess (eg is the street name on same line in both applications)0 -
Yes but most of us go through the charade of claiming we want a current account, when both we and the bank actually know full well.....
We just don't say it.
I don't know what others have stated but I have always stated the intended purpose as savings.
I have successfully opened 3 Lloyds Vantage, 3 BoS Vantage, 3 TSB Enhance, 1 Lloyds Club and 2 TSB Plus accounts over the last few years with no problems.0
