I am taken aback by the vitriol of some of the responses to this thread.

    ….and the ganging up.

The OP asked a question – ‘What would you do?’ And rather than answer it, some posters here have used it as an excuse for character assassination.

MSE. All human life is here.

I hardly think any comments have been of the vitriol nature....ironically by you actualy stating that, makes your comment of the vitriolic nature.:(
Also no one is 'ganging up', the OP asked people's opinions and people have given them....just happens the majority agree with eachother and don't agree with the OP...what would you like people to do lie to make the op feel better and not feel 'ganged up' on?

Can I just say that I didn't say in my original post what my view was I just ask what other people thought about it.

But just to answer the point about someone having to go out and buy a smaller box.... It's not rocket science to cut a box down to make it not as tall and would have taken about two minutes I reckon.

Had three instances of this recently....

Bought items with postage costs in the £5 - £6 bracket.

When they arrived the postage they paid was in line with what they charged me.

However, they used too big a box and could have easily saved £2 - £3 by sending as a small rather than medium parcel.

Would you mark them down for postage costs?

    Yes.
They should take care with the buyers money and not fritter it away unnecessarily.

Making the box smaller, bigger, round, oblong or blumin star shaped doesn't matter if the buyer agreed the postage price..
This seller obviously went to the trouble of actually researching the exact cost of the postage so he didn't overcharge you or undercharge himself...

Blimey this post is reminding me of the post on another forum about a guy complaining that is brand new sofa, looks too new..you both got what you paid for so be happy. Reward the seller with giving 5 stars for giving you exactly what you paid for and move on...

When you think about it, it is a pointless thread to start with...i bet there isn't even a seller with big boxes...:D

I wouldn't mark them down normally and often advise them for future sales.

I was on the other side of things yesterday....

I had a buyer who ordered four items from me.
I said I would pack them and let them know what the postage would be.
My finished parcel weighed 1.1 kg which pushed it over the small parcel limit of 1kg.
So, I unwrapped it and replaced cardboard with bubble wrap and got it down to just under 1kg thus saving my buyer money.
However, after reading the responses in thus thread it seems I shouldn't have bothered ;)

Where did limos come into it... No just two normal taxis.
Let's give the first driver the benefit of the doubt and say he didn't know there was a quicker route...
    Still happy?
Limos because they cost the company more to run and buy and are more expensive generally than a Vespa - Someone offering a service that you agree to pay for even though your desired outcome is just to get from A to B, and takes no heed to the method. However, they have actually quoted you based on their available resources which means you get a Limo. Just like in your original scenario they provided you with the delivery service that they quoted and you agreed to pay for even though all you were interested in is getting the item into your possession. Simple, no?

Your analogy still does not fit the scenario you described initially. If you had said that the seller sent a "small parcel" via MyHermes, thus costing more and taking a longer time than using RM then it would fit, but you didn't, that is a totally different scenario which people may have different views on. But yes, personally I would still be happy with the service because they provided what they promised and charged I agreed to pay.

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

Sorry but you are making this far too complicated and my analogy fits exactly....

I'm saying that if two cab drivers do the same journey in exactly the same types of vehicle and charge exactly the same price per mile they should charge the same price. However if driver B knows a short cut which halves the miles travelled there is a substantial cost saving.

Same thing at the post office .... If a seller doesn't understand the way parcels are charged for they can end up paying Royal Mail far more than they should.

Basically, if you asked a hundred people in the street about this I reckon at least 80% of them would say that Royal Mail charge based on weight and would know nothing about pricing in proportion.
