I know what you mean about food being a drug CCstar.

I've been on my 'diet' for about 17 weeks, and although I am still miserable, I am feeling a bit more stable and less guilty. Its hard to break any sort of habit isn't it? I went to a friends house, and they all gorged on Chinese and finished off with a huge chocolate cake. It was very hard, but I stuck with my chicken chow mein and fruit salad.

Diets = misery to me, I find not being able to eat the fattening foods that make me feel good very depressing.

I guess finding a good low fat substitute helps and reducing the portions. I have pigged out on cream cakes as on holiday I want to try it all in a short time. If I lived there, I would pace myself.

I am sure in the next few days I will get more of a normal diet and lose the holiday fat.

Sorry to go on about me but I hope sharing my experiences might help identify something in you all.

I know when I started to put on weight and why. I used to limit my food then eat well. I was on the pill which upset my appetite and made me eat more plus I used to comfort eat after the stress, like a reward for getting thro the day. It worked until I started to eat too much. Now I simply eat too much. The worst thing is when I want to eat and something annoys me but I am still hungry but hate eating when I feel angry - I get really torn as I can't eat when I'm angry but still feel the hunger.

Does anyone suffer from SAD here (or at least something similar)?

    I sure do

I remember as a child, hating school in the winter (apart from Christmas time) but liking it when the clocks went forward.

Also, in Scotland you get a lot less daylight than in the south of England and it really got to me in December. I was wanting to goto bed at 8pm. On the other end of the scale you get much longer days in the summer but it can be annoying when you want an early night and it's still light. You get used to it tho and in late August when it's dark at 8pm, it's horrible and you know it's going to get worse.

It was annoying on holiday as it cut our days short and felt sleepy, possibly due to jet lag, it was 11pm here when it was 6pm there.

I moved into this house in the summer and it suited it but since the nights have drawn it, it isn't the same place. Some houses suit winter and not the summer too. One consolation, you don't get the noisy kids in their gardens on the miserable dark evenings.

The fact is, no-one should get over anything in any set amount of time. Some people have better support than others. When i've had counselling, people would sooner I talk about now and the future rather than then past, especially sexual abuse! It has just added weight to my claims that it's not important.

Talking about it will be very hard for anyone, it's not like talking about the TV or the weather.

Compared to the people who have had abuse, my abuse was extremely mild but has had some psychological implications about my sexuality, males and friendship.

My depression follows a pattern, and for the past 3 years I have been significantly worse during the darker months (October to April). I haven't been diagnosed as having SAD, but its possible. My Grandad also suffers from this, and has taken medication most years.

Yes, i was going to suggest that in some ways feeling bad in autumn/winter may be psychologically deep rooted. Ever since the school days when September was the month to be hated as the, what then seemed like a long 6 week summer holiday, came to an end.

I feel like crap in October, as there seems to be a permanent claustrophobic greyness covering the land. It probably feels worse this year as there wasn't even a British summer in which to store up that sunshine for the winter.

    Dawnylou, how are you feeling?

I just phoned the occupational therapist who is going to try and get a date for my pyschiarist appointment. I think having a date to focus on will help. She is also going to set up an appointment for me with the volunteer placement woman, as I've been too scared to phone.

Its been about a month since you started the tablets hasn't it? Have you been back to the doctors? Do you think the tablets are helping?

I have been on fluoxetine (SP?) for 2 weeks now. I had to be taken off the Citalopram as they were giving me the most horrid headaches. I literally couldn't take the pain!

I couldn't really see a difference yet - but did feel, well almost normal I guess during the weekend. But today after such a rough night I feel like I had taken a tiny step forward just to take a huge leap back. :(

I may have mentioned this before, but at AA I'm always been told to HALT if I get Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. These four things can make life much harder. Hopefully you will feel a little better after a good nights sleep.
