People Judge Me for my Wedding, but I Love It

Definitely personal taste. Me and my OH are saving hard for the wedding but cos we work abroad, people expect our wedding to be fairly extravagant.. They won't be amused when turkey and ham is on the menu!
I mean yeah, we will have money saved but we want a happy marriage and rather spend the extra €10 k on an additional room in our house to keep us sane!!094 Sealed pot member! (7) €185 (8) €138 (9) €€250
Saving for our first home!0 -
sounds great to me xx Tillyana0

I loved our wedding and it truly reflected us as a couple and as individuals. Our day has been and gone now and it's well chronicled on here, however we had the day WE wanted.
Things we which we did (and thought normal) and what some people considered weird are:
We got married by the beach and the reception was on the beach (hubby kitesurfs).
We played tug-o-war (bride and friends -v- groom and friends) - the bride won:rotfl:
We got married at four and didn't have a 'meal' afterwards. We had a drinks reception followed by a hot buffet 8.
We didn't want a cake.
We didn't want cars - we walked the 500m to the venue on the beach.
We had Joey's wedding vows for Chandler and Monica (in Friends) as our wedding vows (still makes me smile now).
I paid £150 for my dress off Ebay and £600 for my Jimmy Choos. I then cut up the wedding dress and made another dress to wear out of it afterwards.
I walked down the aisle by myself (even though Dad is still alive and we get one fine) and I walked in to This Girl Is On Fire played at full blast and we walked out to Lets Go Surfing Now :rotfl:
We didn't want ANY group staged photos. At all.
We didn't have a first dance.
We didn't do a speech.
We didn't want gifts.
We only had those people there that we are in regular contact with (cousin I last saw 2 years ago? nope not invited).
We made our own photobooth.
Hubby didn't have a best man.
We had a humungous kite-surfing kite in the middle of the room.
We did do invite, we spoke to people and personally invited them.
We collected all the centerpieces from beaches/weekends away etc that we had and decorated the tables individually.
We had a top tip tree from a fallen branch we came across when we were walking the dog - no we didn't paint it white/silver.
We slept together the night before and had breakfast together on the morning of the wedding.
We didn't want flowers, but our CB and MOH said they'd feel silly not holding anything so I made their flowers from foam roses - which they still have on show in their homes :T
We had an amazing time which is reflected in all the photos we've seen of our wedding, it wasn't people turning up to 'anyones' wedding - our name and personalities was stamped all over our day.
Would I change anything? I'd love to say no, but I don't think I'd walk down the aisle by myself. I don't mind that I did, but I don't think I 'took it all in' walking down to hubby. My brother asked to walk me but I was adamant I'd lived with hubby for 6 years, no-one was giving me away as I was already his, however looking back I think if I did it again I might change that part.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
love hearing about weddings!
We got married last May and had a vintage theme with a big nod to the 40's as we love the 40's! We didnt want it to be too specific an era but had it loosely themed around afternoon teas and swing music, we had a swing band playing and 40's & 50's music playing (my husband is a vintage dj!) we had a friends 50's car take us to the church (no flowers needed), we gave out petal confetti (made by me from all the roses he'd given me) and then had a Pimms welcome followed by a hog roast with vintage plates and then afternoon tea & cakes on vintage china ( Luckily I run my own vintage tea and styling business so that was a given!) and in the evening we had cheese & crackers, Cornish pasties and buffet food. The table decs were floral napkins, vintage cut glass vases with a mix of flowers done by my talented friend, we also had bunting and doily table runners (made by me) and a post box for cards and paper fans to cool down after dancing. Lots of this isnt unique but we did what we wanted, the venue was an old dance hall and it was perfect!
We had people expecting us to have chair covers, a colour theme, etc etc but in the end they all 'got it', and loved it!0 -
Those of you who didn't have best men, can you share the reasons for that? Did you have ushers instead?
H2B keeps saying he doesn't want a best man as he doesn't know who to pick out of his brother and 3 close friends, but I'd never really heard of another wedding without one. So I'd be really interested to hear about your weddings.Halifax Credit Card: [STRIKE]£4915[/STRIKE] NEXT Directory: [STRIKE]£1980[/STRIKE]JD Williams: [STRIKE]£1984[/STRIKE] British Gas: [STRIKE]£394[/STRIKE] First Direct [STRIKE]£2985[/STRIKE]Debt-free for over 2 years now!!! :j0 -
I wish my OH wasn't having a best man he's chose a long term friend but he's not doing a speech, he's not a witness nor is he looking after the rings but we've had to pay a fortune for a suit for him just to stand next to my H2B for 10 minutes. grrrr.

We didn't have ushers either . Our guests just sat down, wherever they wanted.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
We are having 2 best men because he couldn't choose, 1 will do the speech and the other will sign the register.Married 30/08/14 :heartpuls0

We didn't have ushers either.
I can honestly say that out of the 400+ weddings I've attended, I can remember no more than a dozen at which the ushers were not a waste of space.
Most blokes acting as ushers seem to think that their purpose on the day is to hand out orders of ceremony, after which they just need to look cool, check out the girls, accept the gift handed to them during the speeches, and get drunk ...We're all doomed0 -
We are having ushers - but that's because what we are actually having is trusted male friends to entertain family members who aren't speaking to each other and to smooth out the family politics so WE don't have to worry about it on the day, and we're calling them 'ushers' (they are aware that these are their duties LOL)
We're also having 'tiny' ushers, as I'm having my niece as a flower girl, and her mum wanted her brother to be a page boy. I refused that, as if I picked him, his cousin, and my godson would feel very left out, so instead the two nephews are going to be tiny ushers and my godson is going to 'help' his dad be my witness :-DOfficially saved enough to cover the cost of our wedding! :A0
