I think you have really odd friends and family :)

It's your wedding - who cares what people think -why on earth does it matter to you enough to post about it. If you really didn't care you wouldn't bother posting. REAL rebels don't need to post LOL

As I said in another thread, Total cost of our wedding in 1981 was £30.28. That's £30 to the Registry Office, and 28p for the two jam donuts which constituted our wedding breakfast. One of the two witnesses kindly gave us a bottle of plonk, which we shared with them sitting on the wall outside the RO (he'd thought to bring four plastic cups). My lovely bride wore one of my white shirts, her jeans, a pair of knickers and a pair of plimsolls. Afterwards, we retired to my flat to consummate the marriage and then we re-opened the shop ... :)

(What I forgot to say is that we told my inlaws that we'd got married two years later.)

Anyhow, 30+ years later one of the nicest weddings I photographed was at Chelsea Register Office. The groom wore his new office suit, the bride wore a party frock with a new pair of shoes, and the witnesses were two Chelsea Pensioners. The happy couple then headed to the nearest pub, before riding off into the sunset (so to speak) in a black cab ...

It's all down to what you want - and how much you're prepared to forget about what other people expect you to have.

    I envy you ladies!

What I actually wanted was a wedding in the lovely country house near our home, followed by a bring and share picnic in the park, but 'that's not good enough' say the judge an jury, so we're spending £15k doing it their way. And guess what, they're still not happy.

Why oh why did we not stick to our guns?!

LOL indeed. I'm not a rebel. Not even a little bit. I made a thread so we could all share our alternative wedding ideas and maybe glean some inspiration from each other. And maybe support each other when family judge us for doing what we want.

I'm really glad for you that you have friends and family that do not ever try to intefer with your plans - that must be ace!
Officially saved enough to cover the cost of our wedding! :A
  • Ours was:
    no wedding flowers
    no best man
    no colour scheme
    no white wedding frock
no music other than one track I walked in to from a favourite film of ours
    no readings
    no photographer
no cars: walked from hotel hand in hand - very romantic
no official invites - I just emailed everyone.
6 guests asked to bring posies from their garden for old teapot vases for reception tables
    no head table
no dancing therefore no first dance
young bridesmaid asked 3 weeks before and told she could wear what ever she wanted.
    3 hrs start to finish.
    no honeymoon
10 weeks from engagement to wedding.
Simple, stress free and very very happy.

I love the sound of your wedding! "Stress free" is what I answer whenever people ask me what my dream wedding is LOL. I do want lots of people there to celebrate with us (I'm a massive fan of having big parties :-D any excuse to get people together) but I really love the sound of your day

Aw thanks tillyenna. We've been married 2.5 years now. Perhaps because we were a little older (although a first marriage for both of us) we were very fortunate to have no disapproval: people were just happy we were happy and getting married, which is how it should be of course.
It really was a lovely 'day': I will never forget saying our vows - and the tidal wave of love that I felt coming from our 35 guests willing us on, so happy for us.

I see brides go through so much stress in the run up to a wedding: I think this thread's a great idea to show if you really don't want the traditional works (and it is absolutely fine if you do) then doing want you want is possible - there are no 'rules' other than in people heads.
Keep sticking to your guns to do it your way. And then have a wonderful cherishing marriage that last forever and a day - that will be the greatest testament to your choices.

  • My wedding theme was 1920s so we asked guests to dress in 1920s dress. I walked down the aisle to a 1920s song. I did not have flowers and the bridesmaids wore dresses from Debenhams that were on sale. We had our reception at a local rugby club where my cousin did a buffet and we had a chocolate fountain (my girls' request) and a roulette table. We hired a PA system to play music but as guests first walked in one of my friends, who is a singer, sang some 1920s songs. I would advice to do what you want to do as it is your special day :)

We are getting married in the town hall when they have antiques fairs in a town with over 200 hotels and B&B's.

Reception if 20 minute drive (shock horror) away from the town under a river and through a mountain.
It is out doors with two half barns, cake and coffee on arrival, camping, fire pits, hog roast and not a 'real meal', cheese wheel cake rather then a 'real cake', giant jenga, giant connect 4, croquet, board games, playing cards and poker, no dance floor, no DJ just a few guitars and a ukelele and whoever is willing. No bouqet toss, no speeches, no glass clinking, no fancy glasses - jam jars with chalk stckers and charms on, no champagne toast - we are having mead though :)

For my mum the shocker was the wedding cake a think, after showing her some pintrest photos she is starting to come round...

No body has complained per say but we do get the ... Hmmmmmm? noise! People who know us well though say 'Awwww thats soo you and Yey hog roast!'
