People Judge Me for my Wedding, but I Love It

  • Hi
My wedding was a bit non traditional in that it really wasn't very formal and was really really cheap & cheerful. I bought bridesmaids dresses from ebay for £3 a piece and made my own dress, I picked some flowers and made a bouquet (which made the MIL very confused..."but you've not booked a florist....?") If you're interested there's loads more detail on prettythrifty dot co dot uk
The reception was more of a 90's style rave in a field that went on til 6am which caused some *faces*
Totally with you on not inviting random extra people, no plus ones unless We a) knew you and b) liked you

    Pretty Thrifty

People seem to have mini heart attacks at even the slightest hint of "non traditional" (and what is traditional anyway?!) .
    Things people have commented on:

My hubby to be isn't having any ushers, just one best man.
I'm not decking the church out in flowers that we can't afford
I'm walking down the aisle to a choir, not the traditional bridal march
Our wedding breakfast is a sit down BBQ ("A sit down BBQ? So its not a proper meal OR a proper bbq?!")
Our reception is at a small hotel which is also a pub..a pub! God forbid!
I don't care what my wedding car is.
Our cake might end up being a cheese one.
We're not having table cloths. Just rustic wooden tables.

All of the above people have commented on with thinly veiled negativity. Apart from that our wedding is pretty darn traditional!

People seriously need to lighten up.

My only gripe to anything alternative after being to 3 weddings in the last couple of years is in relation to food.

One had only bacon rolls & 2 had a fish & chip van. Now as I can't actually eat bread nor greasy fish & chips without vomming I ended up being VERY hungry. None offered any kind of alternative.

Added to the fact that with the fish & chip van you were queing for practially an hour whilst they made enough for everyone, outside, in the dark & cold. (I queued with my very bored & very hungry 6yo)

If you are going this route please at least offer some alternatives for those who don't or can't eat eat greasy stodge & put some kind of delivery system in place so people don't have to spend half the night waiting for food. Or when sending invites make the food arangements know so that guests can make their own arrangements.
I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

Good point quidsy. We're going to be having a buffet of nibbles along side the bbq, so there should be something for everyone (and vegetarian kebabs for veggies!) I've got a few allergies, so I always think about people with different eating issues when organising things LOL

I so know what you mean! Every time I've suggested something my mother has responded with 'well, if that's what you want dear' but her face says 'seriously? that's not a wedding'

It just makes me laugh now, but when I was trying to get things together at the start of organising it irritated me SO MUCH

They sound like fab ideas! I especially love the felt flowers! I'm trying to decide if there's anything I could hold in my hands whilst walking down the aisle instead of a bouquet... I'm thinking maybe a bouquet of lollipops at the moment! LOL.

Also Lego placenames? That's legendary! Who would complain about that.

Aw thanks :) Those 'sweet trees' are all the rage just now so not reason not to hold a bouquet of lollipops

I know, they were my OH idea but I made them up and think they are awesome (If I do say so myself :))

  • We've had loads of backlash and our is more traditional than most. So far I've had the grandparents moan that it's a registry office wedding, mil moan that we are getting married in jan and no one will come and various complaints about the sweetie table coz no one will want it. Well if no one wants it more for me :) we aren't inviting all and sundry coz if I wouldn't feed them if they came to my house why should I invite them out for dinner? The only thing I have had to cave on is inviting one of oh's,aunts over from abroad who I've never met.too many negative ppl. I no there's more ppl who have said I'm booking it all too early ( we get married next jan) and other nasty things well that's a few more ppl off my guest list :) I wouldn't dream of being so !!!!!y about someone else's day! Xxx

  • Ours was:
    no wedding flowers
    no best man
    no colour scheme
    no white wedding frock
no music other than one track I walked in to from a favourite film of ours
    no readings
    no photographer
no cars: walked from hotel hand in hand - very romantic
no official invites - I just emailed everyone.
6 guests asked to bring posies from their garden for old teapot vases for reception tables
    no head table
no dancing therefore no first dance
young bridesmaid asked 3 weeks before and told she could wear what ever she wanted.
    3 hrs start to finish.
    no honeymoon
10 weeks from engagement to wedding.
Simple, stress free and very very happy.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

We've told everyone from the start it will be in vegas and we'll be in star trek costumes.

My dad said bagsie spock. Mum can be the whoopie goldberg charachters.

After a few years of accepting that that is the plan, a simple ceremony in the UK will provoke no comments!

( do fancy those wedding uggs boots that were in the bargain forum a few weeks ago)

And veggies! I went to a wedding of a work colleague a while ago which only had bacon rolls. To be fair she might not have realised about me but one of the bridesmaids was a sikh (sp?) and couldn't eat anything either.
