Some great ideas on here
We really don't want a huge expensive wedding. Some of our friends have got married this year and spent 20k plus! Sooo not what we want to do at all.
We looked at venues abroad but finally we think we have found something perfect for US. So small Church ceremony and then onto a barn, which is very small and will just about fit in the 65 close friends and family that will be invited (we both have large immediate families) . We are allowed to decorate however we want, so that will all be homemade... not sure exactly what year, but it's not until December 2016 so I have plenty of time to work this out!
My daughter will be our only bridesmaid and I want my dad and dp's mum to be the witnesses. I don't want to spend a lot on my dress, but I want it to be amazing (so any recommendations on this point are greatly welcomed!) and I don't want to spend lots on a florist so we are doing that ourselves too!
Food and drinks will be the major cost for us, but I am happy to spend what I need on that so that people enjoy what we lay onWe aren't having a wedding cake, we are having a cheese stack to look like a wedding cake.
Future MIL is not totally enthusiastic about the plans, but our friends all say that this is 'us' and they wouldn't expect us to have it any other way!Mummy to the most amazing and clever little girl x0 -

Try phase eight. My dress for 6 days time *eeeeeek* is one of theirs, not technically one of their wedding dresses though. Spent under £300 as I got it in the sale0 -
Our wedding was a traditional church wedding at our church - we are regulars - DH is a church steward and i run Sunday kids group. We chose not to have the traditional Bridal/Wedding March!! We also had tea and cake in the church hall after so as we could mingle with our invited guests and the many who came from church to share our special day.
Then we decamped to the nearest pub (50 meters away).
We did not have as disco - we had 2 playlists on our ipod, one clasical for the food and one 80's mix for after the speaches. we had a hot buffet (chicken curry, beef casserole, chilli and mushroom stroganof with rice, chips or potato (and sausage and chips for youngsters who did not want the other options) and a selection of puddings) we did a craft table for the younger guests (lots of options) and found it worked well. later on we had cheese and biscuits and natchos and dips. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day and we got what we wanted ... no disco or first dance, a less formal meal, no favours (but kids got something to take home) and an opportunity to spend time with those who wanted to come to the wedding but we could not afford to invite to reception.
We had a great time and so did our guests.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0 -
Our wedding was in a registry office 33 years ago with my mum and dad and DH's dad as witnesses. I lived in Glasgow and he was in Manchester and he was about to change jobs and location so we wanted to be a couple when that happened.
We got married on Thursday (Bank holiday) and I had a designer dress "John Bates" at a quarter of the price, meal at a Chinese restaurant and flew off for a three day honeymoon in Amsterdam
before being moved from a flat to DH's new job with a residential flat provided in a college.
We had been married for 32 years before he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and he really wanted us to have a "proper wedding".
All four DDs worked like mad and we had a wedding blessing in a church his grandparents etc had been married in overlooking the sea and cliffs and a reception in a golf club also overlooking the same sea and cliffs he had grown up with. We had the blessing and he suddenly got weak and died a few weeks later but I am so glad for the wonderful day when he saw so many old friends and family. I cried through most of the day as did a lot of the guests
but it meant the world to him and to us."This site is addictive!"

I'm one of 5, the introverted middle child. A traditional family wedding is my idea of hell. Both of my sisters had massive 150+ guest weddings in posh hotels costing the earth.
So when I booked the wedding venue my mum almost died of heart failure, we're getting married at Walt Disney World!
Relatives are not amused, still have 30 guests which is a lot for a destination wedding but when we told people they asked to come so we decided as long as there's no kids (yep a child free disney wedding) they can come if they really want to.
My mums got over it, his mum not so much lol0 -
I'm getting married in a Unitarian church, which people on this forum have been very rude about because they don't understand what it is.
My dress is from a charity shop which I chose alone, I'm making my own veil and other accessories. My grandmother is walking me down the aisle and I'm making a speech!
I'm glad we're doing what is right for us, regardless of disparaging comments.Current debt: M&S £0(£2K) , Tesco £0 (£1.5K), Car loan 6K (paid off!) Barclaycard £1.5K (interest free for 18 months)0 -
That's spounds great, southoftheriver, nothing to be ashamed of there!
I've also just bought my wedding dress from a charity shop, and...it's red! Everyone I've told so far has been supportive, but I'm expecting some shocked faces on the day, especially as I'm getting married in a church...0
