Thanks for replying. I've ordered the Suyra one from Amazon, just waiting for it to arrive. Chemical dyes don't agree with my scalp so I'm hoping this will be a good alternative for me. Just got to get a good cut first :D

Years ago I had to get about 6 inches chopped off my hair to get rid of a very gone wrong and very permanent blonde :o it scared me so much I've never used another permanent colour since lol

By the way, you might have to experiment with how long you leave it in for. The instructions say one hour but I get better results for my long hair with three.

Oh and I swear the stuff makes your hair grow fast too.

Great thread - I've been lurking for a while.

I'm 53, and have never looked my age - but I find as I get older I have to put more effort into it!! And suddenly, being told I look 40 is a compliment!! How did that happen??

I wouldn't say I'm glamorous, but I don't frighten the horses. My top tips are

    - posture - no matter what your size, you'll look better if you stand up straight. I try to do Pilates every week. I also refuse to wear shoes that hurt my feet - I did enough of that in the past. I've now realised that your face looks better if your feet don't hurt!!
    - wear gloves for dirty jobs (gardening, DIY, clearing the drains) and wet jobs (washing up, cleaning the bathroom, washing the car). If I forget, my hands feel dry for days afterwards, and my nails will flake.
    - find a hairdresser you like and train them to do your hair the way you want it. This can take time!!
    - I need to wear glasses much of the time these days. I spend more money on my glasses than I would on a whole outfit, because a) it's the only item I wear every single day and b) they have to work with every outfit and every occasion (I get sunglasses as my 'free' pair) for at least 2 years or until I need a new prescription.
    - eybrows - I can't see to do my own very easily any more, so every once in a while I have them waxed (£8.00 and you often don't need an appointment). Oh, and the top lip too, for high days and holidays.

I would also suggest you visit a personal shopper - I used the one at Debenhams a couple of years ago. There's no charge, and no commitment to buy anything at all. But she will find things that suit your age/shape that you might not have thought of looking at - and the accessories to go with them, which makes all the difference.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...
  • There are some great suggestions here, I have a few things to add. I decided about a year ago that as a professional in her thirties I shouldn't look like I'd been dragged through a hedge.

Skincare: Try Aldi serum, and Superdrug Vit E Hot cloth cleanser. The cleanser especially has really improved things for me.

Clothes: should fit properly, not be past their best (I'm awful for keeping things that are bobbly/out of shape etc)
I like Great Plains - they reduce things hugely in the sale (difficult to find, but the website is good)
I am working towards having fewer, better quality clothes in a few colours. I like the idea of a capsule wardrobe.

The only beauty treatment I have is dying eyelashes, really seems to give a lift and havn't found a mascara that doesn't flake/irritate my eyes. Tinted lipbalm is easier than lipstick.

Still work in progress, but these things have helped :)

I am in later thirties too and trying to find clothes that make me look smarter and not like a student all the time.
Wearing jeans trainers and a hoody needs to stop!!

Don't cleanse lady might before bed tisk!! But trying to look after my skin more and it is looking better ...

I always think good shoes & a nice bag add the finishing touches.
I'm also a fan of pretty scarves to lift classic outfits.

    :T:T

We have no children, only cats and they didn't seem interested in doing anything for me this morning :D

However, I have had two stonking hair and beauty days. Figured out a side parting looks much better on me and it has been behaving nicely. Started mixing a little foundation with my face cream and wearing that every day, which has been making me feel much better than going without or wearing full foundation. I have been playing with eyeliner to create a Sophia Loren type cat eye, although not as big and black as hers, and now have found a look that suits me.

I love her look, I have started to do a little flick out the corner of my eyes too. I am going to have an experiment with individual fake lashes for a day time look. I will keep you posted.

I'm glad you've found a new image, keep it up :T:T:T

Me too, but I am getting better since there has been a cash 4 clothes type of place round the corner from me. I feel I can justify getting rid if I can get some money back.
