That is a recent addition to the T&Cs and certainly not one I ever agreed to when I signed up here. However, now I've been made aware of it I'll certainly be more mindful of anything I post in this forum.
“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”
  • I'm so sorry to hear your story and am very sympathetic to your dilemma.
Have you ever used this card for an ATM cash withdrawal??? If so, it's possible that the card could have been cloned the last time it was legitimately used by you, if a fraudster had fitted a card reader with camera over the ATM you used, and if you failed to conceal the keyboard when you input your PIN. This happened to my sister a few years ago and the Met Police, who investigated the case, discovered it was a gang they were aware of operating in the Wembley area, using exactly this type of kit. Of course, if you've never used it for cash withdrawals, then this theory doesn't stand up.
Personally, whilst I understand others' views on this matter, I wouldn't rush to end the relationship. You've done the right thing in talking to your OH and reporting the theft to the Police (presumably he's aware you've done this?). Let them investigate it - because when they have, you should (hopefully) have your answer one way or the other. Many ATMs now have CCTV - if they find just one piece of footage where someone unknown has withdrawn the money using your card, then your OH is in the clear. Whilst circumstantial evidence points to your OH, imagine if it's not him? I am a firm believer in innocent until proven guilty and at least when the investigation is complete you will have a definitive answer. If it's not him, you'll be so relieved that you didn't prejudge him without firm evidence. If it is him, kick him to the kerb - with absolute proof, and knowing that he repeatedly lied to you (and stole from you) it should be much easier to end the relationship as you would know that he's not worthy of your trust, faith or love.
Good luck and very best wishes - I sincerely hope your OH isn't the thief as that knowledge would be another heap of pain and anguish to deal with.

If anyone is looking for something to learn from this the one learning point is to cover your hand whilst entering your PIN.
Would cover it up from a camera above and might work for an onlooker too.

A member of his family but not the one he suspected. Luckily he wasn't stupid enough to throw accusations around without proof, as most people on this thread seem to be advising.

Interesting, did he prosecute and/or forgive the culprit?

Yes, or at least don't be obvious when entering the PIN. It's amazing the number of numpties who do really obvious single finger presses of the buttons which everyone in the queue can see - at the very least put a few fingers on the pad so it's not so obvious which keys you're pressing, but best as you say is to cover. The 5 key usually has humps and is in the middle so you can enter the PIN without even being able to see the pad.

Didn't prosecute, told the bank to drop the investigation and got the culprit to repay, though not sure he insisted on the full amount. So forgave really. No police involvement etc. Various feeble excuses.

I've heard of it happening to other people as well and it's amazing how many people forgive this sort of thing, I don't think I would, someone else I know this happened to didn't even demand the thief repay!

I am one of the people who picked up this thread after clicking on "My other half used my credit card to withdraw cash" in the weekly email.

So far nothing I've read from the OP confirms that the other half actually did this. Although it seems highly likely that the OH in question is indeed the culprit, we've only heard circumstantial evidence so far.

So... at the moment the link in the email could border on libellous, depending on whether the OP and her OH could be deemed to be identified or not, and whether he dunnit.

Either way it's not something I'd expect a trained journalist to put in an offering like the MSE weekly email. Extrapolating facts from a thread like this puts MSE on really dodgy ground.

Maybe Martin would do well to buy the latest edition of Essential Law for Journalists and make sure whoever compiles the weekly email reads it.

I'd also - like everyone here - really like to hear from the OP to ensure she's alright and safe.

Certainly wasn't there when I signed up in 2005.

Surely the website admin needed to at minimum ask us to confirm we have read/accepted any changes to the T&Cs rather than sneak it in with no confirmation thay we have seen or even accept the change?

Why on earth has this thread been made into a forum tip for the email???

The OP hasn't even been back since starting this thread. In light of her disclosure of OH losing his temper, is the MSE team not concerned about her and now they've gone and highlighted her predicament so publicly? Words astound me!

I wonder why it is a forum TIP? What makes it a tip?
