  • He's a little engaged. It confusing though - I read about how they record how engaged the baby is from 5/5 to 1/5 - the fifths meaning how much of the babies head can be felt above the pelvis.

But on the notes - the midwife wrote 2/5 at 30 weeks, 3/5 at 32 weeks. Then the midwife we had at 34 didn't record it - finally at 36 this week it was 4/5.

So that's really weird! Either they're recording it in reverse, or just doing it completely wrongly.

I don't know whether I said - but at the appointment on Wednesday, her platelets were lower again. They've gone down at every blood test since the booking appointment.

So they've done another test - they're still not dangerously low - but lower than they should be.

    Hi all

I'm not really supposed to be on this thread til the weekend as I'm not quite 24 weeks but I lurk a bit and noticed the conversation about visitors and just had to post. We are having this same 'discussion' at the moment. I've said I'd rather just let people know after the baby is born as I don't want people (i.e. parents) rushing to the hospital while I'm in labour, ready to pounce on me and the baby straight away...this is my first and I haven't a clue what I'm doing! I just want a chance to get used to it, maybe have a wash! haha!

My mum is really put out by this. She wants to be there in the waiting room, she's even said she wouldn't mind being in during my labour but would leave when the actual pushing started. I know she means well and generally my mum is absolutely amazing but I just do not want this and feel like I'm offending her when I say I don't want her there. She doesnt get it's not about not wanting *her* there - just anyone, apart from OH!

It also doesn't help that OH agrees with her and says he is texting both sets of parents to let them know I'm in labour. He thinks I'm being completely unreasonable. If I thought for a minute they'd just be happy with that and then would await further news then I'd be fine but I know they'd be setting off for the hospital straight away!

Thank goodness we still have over 16 weeks to continue this discussion....!!!

We had the same argument and I still didn't get what I want. He told both sides how many centimetres dialated I was, then his parents completely ruined the compromise of people visiting us in hospital because we set a time limit and they completely ignored it by coming half an hour early making my sister go home :(

Have a mobile off/on aeroplane mode rule maybe?

My family want to know when things are 'progressing' here but I'm not sure if I want to tell them until baby is here. Only a handful would be able to appear, and most of those would have work to juggle a visit with so probably won't be on route. I just don't know if I'd rather not get messages asking how it's going, or the whole family to be informed by another relative what's happening. It's hard to know what is pennikity and what is just reasonable/letting people be excited.

I'm kind of getting there working out visitors after baby is born, relatives who are a 'need-to-stay-somewhere-distance' away are coming a couple of weeks+ after due date for a couple of days. Local family... still not sure.

I've read a few places some people have recommended visitors in hospital to get it over with because the staff will insist on strict visiting times, but at the same time I don't know if I'd rather just have none initially until we feel ready.

Haha, it's a very strong possibility Freddie! Baby wasn't engaged at all at my MW appointment this week so guessing he's planning on staying put for a little while yet at least.

Do you feel ready yet ThinkPink? Hope you manage to get out for some fresh air tomorrow :)

Don't be so sure Beckyy. My daughter wasn't engaged until labour as far as I know yet she was 2 weeks early. My biggest sign that things might happen sooner rather than later for me was I had my show at 36 weeks. Although it can regrow if it comes a long time before labour. My mum said I was engaged for 7 weeks before coming (early still though).

ThinkPink I don't think many people have their waters break when they're out and about without warning. Generally they're meant to break towards the end of the first stage of labour when you're almost ready to start pushing. Obviously it does vary though, but the only person I know who had them break in public was having their third, was in labour and decided to get a Tesco shop done before going to hospital. They broke when she lifted the heavy bags into the boot.

They are doing neither, i think you have it wrong in your head,
1/5 is starting to engage, and 5/5 is fully enaged, although i think they class it as engaged from 3/5 onwards.
So your OH is right on track!:)
    Edit,
Googled it and am totally confuzzled now, it used to be the way i explained and it does in fact appear reversed now.
    How utterly confusing.

It used to be how many 5ths were in the pelvis but it is so subjective that it is really unaccurate.... they don't know how big the babies head is for a start or how big the mum's pelvis is!! I think the key things are if the baby's head is fixed in the pelvis (ie 2/3rd-fully in) or if it is freeflowing (out the pelvis-sitting at the brim!)

Some midwives used to put arrows to explain if it was 1/5th in the pelvis or 1/5th left outside the pelvis!

I would say baby if fully engaged when you feel like you have a orange stuck between your legs :rotfl:

  • Yes I know I was confused too.

It's because the fifths refer to how much of the head can be felt above the pelvis. Not how much of the head is below the pelvis.

    Opposite of what I'd assumed

Got to echo Euro here... Baby Tracker is amazing. I still use 15 weeks later. Love it. Keeps me right. Also download the Wonder Weeks app as great for telling you when baby is going through a "development leap". Another one is FreePrints where you get 45 free photos a month just have to pay postage.

Good luck to everyone due over the next wee while. I am jealous and super broody already. DH says no to another baby and won't even talk about it until Catherine is one. I'd have another tomorrow :rotfl:

I missed the post re apps... What's the baby tracker one?

Had a busy weekend, tempted to go to bed soon! DH gran was rushed into hospital on Friday so we have been waiting to find out whether he needed to go up there but think she is on the mend (as much as a 93 year old can be!) and we may go up next weekend before I can't fly. Yesterday we spent the afternoon at a street food and music festival and today started off at a fun day organised by a friend before going to an 'alternative' baby event with doulas and BF counsellors and reflexology etc, it was a lovely event and I'm hoping to work with a doula in training for antenatal meetings - not sure I want someone at the birth but I want to make sense of all the info and options out there and decide what I would like in an 'ideal' birth... As much as I know it may not go to plan at all!

Can't believe the weekend is over already :( hope you all had a good one and are doing wel!
