  • Second/third time mums and new mums... We have just sorted out the car seat someone has lent us (I know the history, jts from a friend I know will have looked after it and we are going to buy one anyway, this is just for the first couple of months). The bottom strap of the harness is every so slightly frayed - the rest is in great condition. DH is now panicking they won't let us leave hospital with this car seat. Any thoughts? I can post a photo if necessary! I think it's just where it rubs on the car seat padded cover and not actual damage.

  • Well it's a personal choice.

If it is just ever so slightly frayed then it's probably absolutely fine and wouldn't cause you any problems (without seeing it it's hard to say)

If it's just cosmetic and not actually affecting the integrity/strength of the strap.

If you're sure that it's been well looked after and it seems sound - you're happy with it - then no problem.
    Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)

  • I will post a photo tomorrow (just got up to bed and we have 2 flights of stairs!) so you can see... As much as I wouldn't want to put baby in danger, I can't see that it's caused any damage to integrity of strap. If I had any doubt I would go and get a new seat straight away... Just hard to know when you have no experience!

  • That doesn't sound fun having to climb all those stairs psychopath! We don't have any stairs at home and I work on the ground floor so when I do have to go upstairs it's hard work.

I've got a busy week this week. Yesterday DH was on a late (which did mean he got me fish and chips on the way home). I have yoga tonight. We're going for dinner with DH's parents tomorrow. Thursday we have another NCT class. Friday we're supposed to be going for dinner with my parents. Saturday we've got an all day NCT session. I'm going to be exhausted by then.

Also hoping to get into town on Sunday so I can get some slip on trainers, finding it harder to do up the laces (I have special inserts because I have dodgy ankles so need supportive shoes like trainers).

My mum sent me a picture of all the clothes she has for the baby at home. It seems like it's about the same amount we already have. Lots more washing and drying to do! At this rate me and DH are going to have to give up our wardrobe for babies clothes :rotfl:

We have decided on a pushchair and car seat so just need to buy them. We've got the cot, need to get bedding for it. Also realised we need blankets, muslin clothes, nappies, wipes etc. Seems like a never ending list.

I can't help pyscho I'm afraid. Ours was brand new (a deal with our pram). I think a second or third time mum is more likely to be able to answer this for you.

I'm not sure what the guidance is on frayed straps on a car seat either xx

I'm exhausted being out every night without being pregnant :rotfl: I'm out tonight, tomorrow is NCT which is on until 10pm then it's 20-30 minutes to get home, then I have swimming on Thursday :)

Not sure if they would be any use, but I have trainers from clarkes. They have laces but they are just for tightening the shoe rather than having to do them up every time you put them on. They are elasticated around the top so they aren't quite slip on (although you can fold the backs down too)... might be worth a look for you. I got them in the sale, not sure if there is still a sale on though. Just had a quick look and can't find them :(

Thanks though :) I don't know what to do... if it's best to get a new one then we will, obviously I would rather not risk it. Just silly getting a new one if this one is actually fine.

According to this site, fraying is a safety issue:

See a few posts down someone talks about the difference between fuzzing and fraying (with links).

Thank you :) I've just found the same car seat is being price matched by john lewis and we have wedding vouchers leftover, so may just buy one anyway to be on the safe side. We can still use the base that our friend lent us with the car seat.
