A lot of the NHS is making cuts and mat leave can count towards those. My department is supposed to find 5% cuts for next year. There are three of us off on mat leave and our salary savings (if they don't get temporary cover in) pretty much cover the required savings. Which in turn means that they don't need to actually lose any posts.
Not sure if the other poster's work is doing something similar...Mortgage when started: £330,995

I work for the NHS as well, and won't be covered-2 of my colleagues will pick up my caseload between them. I can't remember ever seeing a mat leave being covered by a new member of staff. Even when someone leaves properly or retires the post isn't sent to redeployment or advertised until they have actually left, which means ages of a vacant post before it gets filled.
42 working days left here, that's not taking into account half days for parentcraft and breastfeeding workshops, and appointments
Hope your dog is ok Robots.
Secret-that's lovely of your hubby, my OH has chats with bump while I'm sleeping-he seems to think it doesn't wake me though! Every time he tries to feel her moving she stops-I think she hears him coming and thinks it's fun to torment him, lol.
I have my whooping cough jab on Monday, I'm not too bothered as I don't really mind needles.
Thanks goodness it's Friday tomorrow, I am knackered as bump seems to think she is in a party bus at crazy o'clock most mornings!0 -
I'm fed up of mat leave now! Hehe! I worked (full time teaching) until 38+2. Been off for 3 weeks now and I'm SOOOOOO BORED!!! Mostly because I'm fed up with waiting, but still!
as for cover.... my head knew about my pregnancy in June 2013, she eventually employed someone to cover me 4 weeks before I was due to leave. She worked alongside me for a week, then taught the class alone for 3.5 days, then left! So I went back into full time for just over 2 weeks, and when I left on the Friday before half term I had no idea who my cover was!!! I can honestly say though I haven't worried about it at all, because it's not my problem!First date 10.2.2002
Engaged 18.8.2010
Wedding 9.4.2012
Baby #1 due 26.2.2014 :j0 -
Re leave - I get full pay for 8 weeks and half pay for another 18 do they still have to find the money to pay me that as well as pay cover so I guess that's it. They want to employ a permanent cover person but whoever it is will start off with covering me whilst I'm on leave, that's what they are waiting for approval for funding from the big wigs.
I'm not stressed about it at all and I don't think I would be contacted whilst away as my manager is a stickler for the rules! We are absolutely not allowed to be contacted if on leave of any kind. I just feel sorry for my colleagues. I've been that person who picks up the flack and the lack of support is laughable!0 -
I had my first day of mat leave today and have found it v strange. I've left at 35 weeks, 37 is term for twins. I still feel fine but doctors advised to finish at 32 weeks so thought I'd left it long enough. I'm going to have to go cold turkey to stop me logging into work.
My replacement hasn't started yet, but sounds very good which I'm glad of as it's going to be very busy for my team. But I'm not best pleased that, as a specialist temp, she's getting paid 3x what I do.
MSA- your OH's time with baby in the morning is v sweet. My OH is still a little freaked out seeing my bump move, I have to admit I am myself at times. Sometimes I have a huge "dent" in my bump as there's one baby at the top and one really low down so just a gap in the middle. It does look odd!0 -

Can you not go by yourself or find a friend/family member? Or do you mean you will just have to wait until the weekend to go?
My friend went to one but said the only real bargains were if you bought furniture or buggies on display, so if you werent going to do that, she said most of the other stuff you could find for the same price online, so dont think youve missed much0 -
Cllola it's funny because my director is also a stickler for the rules (to the extreme most of the time, i.e. There's no people element to her because she sees everything as a tick box exercise) but she seems to have absolutely no problem with contacting me whilst I'm off sick or on leave. It's really annoyed me because I only got given a work laptop for health reasons, as it was determined by occupational health that sometimes I wasn't well enough to travel into the office (due to my endometriosis) so I could work from home instead, and when I was given it my director made a huge fuss (she never wanted me to have the laptop in the first place) about me ONLY using it if I was officially working from home and at no other time and not 'abusing the privilege' (cheeky sod - as though I would - I'm actually fairly senior), yet she's the one a year on who sees no problem in contacting me whilst I'm off sick or on leave to ask me to log on to get stuff to send her (stuff that incidentally I know is already sitting in her inbox as I had sent it the week before, etc).
The other week I phoned her when I came out of hospital and explained that I had collapsed at home and been taken in by ambulance, and that I was home now but had been signed off for a few days just to make sure I was ok so I wouldn't be in for a while. She didn't even so much as bother to ask how I was or express concern for me, all she said was 'oh well make sure you log onto your laptop and set your out of office in case we miss anything urgent. When will you be coming back?' That was the entire phone call....
So with her it's following the rules when it suits her. So I shall make a point of handing it back in when I go off on leave and making it extremely clear that I won't be getting contacted, if she makes a fuss I will make it very clear via my manager that had she got a replacement in place in good time and let me do a handover she would have no reason to be contacting me in the first place!!! It's just annoying as I know my health problems will rear their ugly head once I come back from maternity, and it'll be another fight on my hands to get the damn laptop back again....
It gets me really mad (as you can tell).....lolOur first baby due 25th May 2014 :T
