    Hallo ladies

Welcome to mat leave Littlemoog and sweetilemon :) (and anyone else who has recently started theirs and I've missed in the past couple weeks).

I don't iron either - and would never consider ironing baby clothes!

I agree with eating things in moderation; if it is that bad for baby how is it not bad for you? I used to smile and nod agreement if the mw asked if I was avoiding foods, especially seafood!

sweetilemon, really hope that Argos get their act into gear soon! It really is ridiculous.

Moneypenny, my biggest fear was ending with another emcs and the only way to ensure that this didn't happen was to have a planned section. It really was a wonderful experience and I've healed really well after. I was up out of bed the same day and they were happy to discharge me the morning after.
In the morning, after arriving at hospital I met the surgeon, anesthetist and midwife who would be in theatre to receive baby on delivery. They each went through the procedure and asked if I had any questions or concerns. Midwife listened into baby's heartbeat and did so again just after having the spinal.
I had an escort to walk down to theatre with and his role seemed to be to ensure I was at ease as he made small talk the whole time (actually rather annoying as I don't see the point of small talk). Whilst waiting for them to finish stitching up the first lady, I was in an ante-room to the theatre and had the cannula put into my hand. This bit was unpleasant but again the escort made small talk during it. Then walked into theatre and sat down - it took about 10min to do the spinal and they then helped me lie down. The atmosphere was so calm and relaxed in theatre it helped me remain calm - there was music playing the whole time and none of the sense of urgency that was there last time. It was nothing like the atmosphere during my emcs. It took about 10min to remove my previous scar and open me up, but I have a picture of baby coming out and he was put straight onto my chest for skin to skin. Thereafter, I had no idea what they were doing as my focus was fully on baby. I think knowing that in less than half an hour of walking into theatre I'd be holding my baby really helped.

E has fitted so nicely into our family, and is (thus far, early days I know!) a really easy and chilled out baby.
  • Thanks Saffa that has made me feel so much better! I don't want a general anasthetic nor labour plus EMCS. If they could guarantee a successful VBAC I'd go for that but labouring for 24 hours, pushing for 2hours plus EMCS plus infection was horrible. I remember it being quite quick the time when they put me on the table to getting to hear the baby, probably 15-20 minutes, your right, the total focus is then on the baby. DD1 kept being whisked off by midwives for various reasons. I was fine until husband was ushered out the DD1 was elsewhere then I cried my eyes out due to all the emotions to a quite unsympathetic anaesthetist!!

Huge congrats on the bambino too :)

Money penny .. I've had 6 sections.. 4 emergencies and 2 kind of vaguely planned.. one I had kkidney failure and if they had offered to cut my head off drag the baby out and stitch my head to my bum I wouldn't have cared and just said do it.. I was in agony.. the other I was starting with kidney failure and had other stuff planned and had to fit everything in around that..

Healing was no different between any of them.. it was just less panicky on the way to theatre.. not that I panic, but the staff get hysterical over nothing.. I did have an infection after the first, and a massive reaction to the micropore and an ovarian cyst and a terrific UTI (cross contamination for the bowel!!!) which took 3 weeks to clear up. And then a couple of the stitches were really sharp and on subcutaneous so I took them out myself.

The first her heart went from 135bmp to 85 to 145 to 15 to none.. she was out within 5 minutes...
The second I had 2 contractions and a uterine rupture.. that was fun!
the third I was in labour for 4 days and it was utterly horrific with the staff refusing to do anything despite the consultant saying to induce..
The fourth was Madam kidney failure and my liver was starting to give up by the time they dashed it through.
the fifth my waters went at 34 weeks and the hospital insisted they hadn't, without checking.. and labour didnt start then I got a uterine infection and it was major panics again with tachycardic baby and me and and temp of 40.7'C
the sixth I had the 9th August free.. it was then or not at all, she'd still be in there now! My kidneys were starting to give up again.

This one is a wing it again.. I refuse to plan to put myself through it it seems a bit masochistic for something I do not ever want.

LMAO!!! I sound like a crazy person now...

I cried the second the baby cried so was a mess anyway.. OH was not able to leave me because I refused to let him.. the staff could go to hell he was staying right where he was.

They did take so long to stitch up and repair the damage with 2 the spinal had started to wear off.. I just told them to hurry up and not give my the epidural.. I had the spinal done and an epidural sited and 3 IV lines and what did I moan about???? ... the clip thing which monitors the heart rate... that bloody thing drove me dippy!!

I went home next day with all the ones the baby didn't need to stay in.. if they stay, I stay.. if they are ok, I discharge myself.

28 weeks now and have been told I have gestational diabetes - very upset about it and what it means for my plan of a home birth, but my OH is trying to get me to focus on the here and now and my bloods at the moment.

Pigpen - I recall you mentioning a website to another lady with GD which helps show the carb levels in certain foods. I've flicked back the last few pages but can't find it. Please can you help again?

I haven't seen a dietician yet so just trying to do what I can at home, but at the moment all my after meal levels are fine it is my morning (fasting) one that is high and not sure what to do about that.

I'm not very good at posting, happier just to read, hope that is OK

Carbs and cals is the book.

Try not to worry. Same thing happened to me. I got very upset then put it into prospective. The big risk is your baby will be big, but that's controllable. Diet wise I was told to avoid double carbs, swap for wholegrain /brown pasta, rice, bread etc. Make from scratch and avoid processed foods (if having potatoes, make yourself rather than buying premade chips/mash etc) Don't eat high sugar foods like fruit, sugar drinks etc. Opt for the highest fibre options if chosing crisps, biscuits and low sugar in yoghurts. The main thing that helps my fasting score is eating dinner at an earlier time, I'm bad for having dinner late on. You can lower your sugars with excersize although this tends to spike my fasting blood ( eg if I walk to work then take my fasting bloods). Try not to worry, it sounds scary but it isn't as bad as it sounds.

Carbs and cals app .. there is a free version and the paid for one is about £4 i believe.. its been a while since I bought it.. but it is fabulous!

The morning one possibly means you need a snack before bed.. your blood sugars drop about 3am .. set an alarm and test your blood then.. just one night.. if that reading is low then you need a snack before bed. what happens during the night is the BS drops and the liver starts using your fat stores to make glucose to keep you alive.. this is what to everyone every night but with diabetes the body then struggles to deal with that glucose leading to a high morning reading.

A snack at bed time regulates the BS overnight so the liver is creating less glucose and a lower morning reading.

See what your 3am bloods are and if it is low nag about the dietician appointment. :D

No problem. Try not to worry too much about the home birth, my midwife had said if I chose home birth she would still support me. As it's my first I would rather be in hospital for reassurance in general if anything went wrong. Also don't fancy the mess...but if it's your preference I'm not sure that along should hold you back. Obviously your midwife will be able to guide you best. I was told my babies sugars will be monitored for 24hrs after birth.

Their bs can drop very very quickly in the first 24 hours and they need to be fed often to keep them stable. Low BS results in them being sleepy so they won't feed and you end up in a downward spiral. It is very common with prem babies too. a 'normal' bs for a newborn is about 2 so when they say it is 2.1 and you panic because that it dangerous for you it is fine for a baby! They do need checking regularly the first few hours as your hormones are removed from their body .. feeding every time they open their mouth is the way forward!

The staff were supposed to do my youngests for 24 hours, she was born at 36 weeks.. but they 'forgot' so then reported me to SS because I refused to stay longer because they had not done their job.. she was perfecty fine, waking for feeds, the 2 readings they did were perfect so no reason to be concerned at all. The paed was happy to discharge her and I guessed their opinion was worth more than the MW who barely looked at either of us.

  • Sweetielemon - my babies bloods were monitored for 24hours after birth as she was classed as "big" and it's standard procedure. I didn't have GD. I think from memory it's a heel !!!!! test to draw a small amount of blood, don't think DD even woke up.
