  • Thank you TCOD and time2deal.

I know it's a test and it's for the benefit of the baby and I. I would personally just rather not have if it's not necessary as I don't drink pop of any kind only water anyway and the thought of drinking lucozade on an empty stomach makes me feel sick. (I know big baby eh?!)

The BMI thing is taken when I booked in and again at 28 weeks in my notes, I thought this was the same fro everyone. It is rather frustrating as I have gained weight (not sure where as I don't have a bump yet!) but they are very specific and tell me every time in see them to keep my BMI under 30.

I've already gained 6KG so it won't be long before it goes over, I thought weight gain was fine as long as it wasn't excessive.

Hope everyone is ok and thank you again for replying

Sweetpotato I was given the GTT based purely on being over a BMI of 30 so would probably ask your midwife for clarification.

T2D I completely agree with you especially as when I told my sister I was having the GTT she said 'Yeah I've had to do it with all 3 kids, doesn't everyone have to do it' and she couldn't believe it when I told her it went off BMI over here. Fat or thin you can still get it and once again highlights the differences between the UK and Oz health system.

cmace2 congratulations on your little one :D

AFM - had my 28 week midwife appointment today and had the really nice midwife who actually takes an interest in how you are and what might be affecting you. I've gotten the results of my GTT and unfortunately they're abnormal so I've got gestational diabetes. I tried to laugh it off by saying just book me in for a c-section now but I'm a bit upset by it to be honest. No idea why but just felt like I wouldn't end up with it. Whilst with the midwife she asked how the scan went and when I said I was told about the low lying placenta she looked at my notes for the scan and there was no mention of it so she said that I should ask when I go back why it wasn't mentioned on the previous notes as that could cause big issues if anything happened and I wasn't concious to tell them about it.

Anyway I have a growth scan and consultant review tomorrow morning and the Diabetic Midwife rang to ask if I knew that I had an appointment with her at 11am tomorrow, which I didn't know!!, and when I mentioned that I was having a growth scan and consultant review she said that was with her. Eh you've obviously not seen my notes then and aren't aware that I have other issues going on. We're now just going to prepare for having a scan every two weeks, and I'll find out tomorrow how the GD is going to be managed which I'm hoping will be diet or tablets as I really don't want to be injecting myself.

I've told work I have no idea when I'll be in the office tomorrow as the scan is at 10.15am, the consultant after that and the diabetic midwife at 11am. What a great day for hubby to be going off with work not, just wish I had my family to take along with me as two people will hear better than one person.

So after that pity post I'll wish everyone else a good day and will let you know how everything goes tomorrow.

Alioops one of my friends in oz didn't have the test until get third baby, and it explained problems she had with the earlier pregnancies. Her weight fluctuates significantly generally so I'm not sure why she wasn't tested before.

That was in NSW, so it probably even varies by state.

Sorry to hear you have it though. But perhaps a silver lining that many women seem to end up lower then their starting weight after the baby. Hopefully it means you'll get excellent nutritional advice for the next three months. (Unlike my messed up diet, largely driven by lack of appetite and availability of brownies). Sorry, don't mean to be glib, but it's better it's found now and addressed. Hugs.

Aw Ali, sorry to hear that. If I could, I'd come with you for support. Its hard when you have to go to these things alone. Try to stay calm and I think its good advice from T2D, think of it as an opportunity to get the best advice nutritional advice possible and the scans as another chance to see baby. (small comfort I'm sure)

Totally agree with everyone that BMI is shocking to use during pg, even for GTT. I'd be classed as overweight now if I was using my pg weight, and my gain is classed as normal and my bump is measuring fine for dates. No idea what the criteria is here for GTT, even with national guidelines it seems to vary massively, as they are only that, just a guideline not a rule.

Thanks T2D I agree that if it's diet controlled etc then it's going to be better for myself and hubby as we could both do with losing pounds anyway. It was just a bit of a shock as I've had a relatively 'easier' pregnancy than I thought I would

Thanks as well Sewit especially for the tag along offer, it's definitely appreciated. It just sucks hubby being away but nothing we can do about it now. He'll just get the hormonal phone call afterwards lol.

I agree though that BMI is a stupid thing to use during pregnancy however having said that if I didn't have a high BMI I wouldn't have had the test and it probably wouldn't have been discovered as I don't have any symptoms listed on the NHS website although can they really use frequent urination as a symptom for pregnant women :rotfl:.

I'm feeling a bit better now and my line manager has agreed that I can work from home after my appointments tomorrow and still do Wednesday at home so that's a great outcome as I can just go home and relax afterwards.

congratulations cmace, enjoy hugs with Leo

sorry to hear you've got GD Alioops, I have had to have scans, diabetic midwife and consultants appointments every scan I've had, quickest I got through was 2 hours, worst was 4 hours but the scan was running 50 mins late. Not much of an indicator but I'd guess it will be a couple of hours because they'll have to tell you about the diet, possible tablets etc, and show you how to use the testing kits.

AFM, hubby and I went to antenatal classes today, which were good, it was good for hubby to hear stuff from an outside person, and I found out how to arrange a maternity unit tour when I'd been told elsewhere that they didn't exist any more.
tomorrow I go for my 34 week scan, my sister is coming along so that we make sure I come out with the answers I need, as I'd like to know what they have planned for me.

I hope you're ok lovely x see if you can gather as much information as you need and use the medical professionals there as much as you can. Hopefully things will even out for you and things will revert to normal for you after birth. xx

Congratulations cmace2 that's wonderful news (about being safe and healthy) although I hope you heal well very soon. What a lovely little name Leo, very cute! xx

sewit I know how you feel, we visited a friend recently with a newborn.... really hit it home!

    Hi everyone
    Quick update from me!
Baby boy (still no name) was born 12 days early, on 7th August at 9:27pm, weighing 5lb 11oz

Will read through & maybe write the birth story on the relevant thread when I get a minute.
BF is proving hard work - milk is just coming in, so initial latch discomfort is starting to get better. MW coming out 2m so going to ask her to check latch & maybe suggest alternative positions etc
  • Congratulations credit crunch

From my previous personal experience and being a maternity night nanny the first 2weeks breast feeding are hardest and certainly after 6wks for most people it becomes hell of alot easier.

I remember the cracked nipples n wanting to cry at every latch n so not looking forward to that initial milk engorgement.

Congratulations Credit! Delighted for you and you're both doing well and on the safe arrival. I hope it all works out for you with the BF. Hopefully the midwife will be able to help you and you'll look back in a few weeks and all will be fine.

I keep forgetting this is the thread where babies arrive... eeek !
