Hello everyone, what another gorgeous day! I'm sat in the garden and doing no housework today.

For those ladies breastfeeding, can you help me understand how expressing works please? I'm looking at electric pumps but what do you do with the milk once it's out? How do you store it and for how long?
If I go out for the day do I have it in a bottle and do I need to warm it? Or keep it cool until warming? I've really no idea!

I really want to bf but not in public so I'm looking for a pump.
    Thanks :)

666... 6 hours out at room temperature, 6 days in the fridge, 6 months in the freezer.

I always kept it cool until needing it if we were taking expressed milk out somewhere, we'd put it into a bottle. DS didn't mind drinking it cool anyway so tended not to heat it.

hi all, had my 31 week check up with the midwife today, everything is ok :) only potential downside is baby is still breach, potentially with legs straight up given where I'm feeling the movements. Had it confirmed that the reduced movements (still getting them but not so violent or constant) are likely due to the heat or lack of space. There is still time for the baby to move herself but if not then after my 34 weeks scan it's likely they will try ECV (?) at 35 weeks. Why is my child starting life as such a little awkward munchkin? she's been like this from the very start!

Lemon my DD turned by herself at 37 weeks after I used tips from the Spinning Babies website. Have you looked on there?

This is a useful leaflet about expressing and storage. http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/BFNExpressing_and_Storing.pdf

I'm going to put my peer supporter hat on now:

Something to bear in mind about expressing is that we do not recommend it before baby is six weeks old. This is for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it interferes with the natural supply and demand which is so important in establishing your supply. During the first six weeks especially you are laying down receptors in your breasts, and missing any feeds, or reducing skin to skin contact which you get during feeds, will affect this process.

Some women do not experience a problem, but many will, and you won;t know which you are until it's too late.

The same applies to nipple confusion. Many babies get confused by the very different actions required to milk the breast versus using a bottle. With bottles, the milk just pours out into their mouth, and the teat is only just inside their mouth.

With breastfeeding, the nipple is down the back of the baby's throat and the tongue is used to milk the breast (this is the action that's so good for jaw development and subsequently speech) and the milk only comes when they work for it.

This difference can create problems for babies, including bottle preference (because some babies don;t want to work for their milk!) and confusion over which technique to use.

Additionally, expressing is hard work, even with a very good double pump, and lots of women find they can;t get very much out with a pump.

Baby is much more efficient than expressing, and what you can pump is no reflection of your supply/yield, and there are women for whom expressing simply doesn;t work despite their having plenty of milk.

Can I ask why you don;t want to feed in public? Lots of mums feel shy at first, but gradually work up to feeding out and about and soon realise pretty much no-one can tell, and no-one can see anything (because there is a baby's head in the way!).

It can be daunting at first, but a little practice at home in front of the mirror, and perhaps using a cover if you want to, can help make it an easy experience.

Please feel free to ask me questions, or if you'd like to talk to a trained peer supporter you can call the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 0300 100 0212and talk through how you feel about it and maybe come up with a plan of action.

You may also find you feel differently once baby has arrived.

Of course, expressing is something lots of women like to do after the first six weeks, and it's not a bad thing, just ideally to be avoided in the early weeks unless you have a premature baby.

Hope that helps a bit and isn't too preachy :)

More possible signs today: very light spotting and some periody cramps. My neighbour reckons I need to get on the birth ball and get it going!

So glad I am not in the top 10 yet :rotfl:

Peonie I have decided I am fine with trainee midwives as they have the latest training and hopefully are very pro moving around during labour which is what I want if possible, although I also want a water birth so not sure how much moving I will do.... although my hospital seems to be very happy to let ladies labour standing up etc anyway.

Thanks for reminding me I need to write my birth plan, thats on the list for tomorrow!!

I have been on maternity leave since Friday and loving it so far!

Monday I went to step daughters sports day, yesterday lunch with a friend and today went to see my Dad and Nan,.

Tomorrow I am having a at home day and then seeing friends in the evening and then as of Friday we have step kids for a week so OH will be home with me too and I should be seeing my NCT ladies and a couple more lunches with friends! :D

Defo enjoying the freedom whilst I still can!

Only bad thing about being pregnant at moment is I have thrush.... went to doctors today and got pessaries though as walk in clinic last week only gave me external cream which worked for a few days but now its back and worse than ever!

36+1 today so tomorrow I will be writing my birth plan and sorting clothes out for baby.....and writing a list of names.....as baby is still currently nameless as me and OH cannot agree....

skintchick, hope you end up with your arms full of a baby soon, I've been having a look at the spinning babies site as little miss has been in awkward positions at all scans and MW visits so I'm getting prepared.
  • Always alone there's a good thread on this and it was relatively recently. I remembeer feebie queenie from 12-24 thread was posting on it. Something to consider if you haven't is that mat leave is calculated weeks 17-25 so many people suspend to maximise that.

Skint chick - not preachy. Interesting read. I thought babies took to a bottle easier the earlier it was introduced?

credit crunch I'm not worried so much about baby being too big to be delivered more that I'm not convinced i can stretch that far - i don't think i could get a 10cm gap between my legs they'd have to be in different postcodes lol
