  • Purcy- pm daisie, t2d or me your fb email address and we'll invite you. The invite will go to your email account not your fb notifications. Sorry- I thought I had replied to this! :)

Disney, I'm having growth scans. I thought I was small compared to a woman in work due two days before me and similar build so asked my consultant (at around 26/7 weeks...). He measured me and referred me 'for peace of mind', not because he thought I was particularly small. Had two scans since (29 & 30 weeks). My baby is measuring two weeks behind so I have to have growth scans fortnightly and the medical advice for me is that:
    1. if baby's normal movements reduce in any way I have to go to hospital straight away- I was told not to bother monitoring it over two hours/ lying on left side/ drinking cold or sugary drinks. Nope, straight to hospital...
    2. CTG (fetal heart rate monitoring weekly/ twice weekly though consultant is pretty laid back about this and it's being offered more for reassurance than anything else)
    3. Induction of labour either at 37 or 38 weeks as baby is fully cooked by then anyway and they quoted some research that placenta can deteriorate faster with small babies so safer out than in.

I am considered a high risk pregnancy due to a uterine abnormality so this monitoring might not be 'standard'. Also my hospital use a 'grow' chart which is personalised to your booking in height and weight- it's considered more accurate than the 'one chart fits all' approach. On the old style chart I am measuring in the 40-50th centile, on the grow chart baby is under the 5th centile. Check your pregnancy file to see if it's a grow chart your mw is measuring you on (I assume fundal height?) or if it's a generic chart.

Also, bear in mind the following if your mw is going off fundal height:
    1. Is it the same mw who measured you at 30 weeks? I've had 3 drs/ mws measure me. Dr measured at 32, mil (a mw) measured at 28 and a hosp mw measured me at 29. This was all in the space of a week or so!
    2. What position where you in? Was it the same position as the 30 week measurement?
    3. Where you bloated/ constipated/just eaten at 30 week scan?
    4. Position of baby, then and now- they take up more 'room' if they're breech/ head down than they do if they're transverse.

Basically, try not to stress- easier said than done I know! Concentrate on baby's movements as they're one of the best and quickest signs that baby is happy. Hopefully mw is just being cautious and following procedure but if growth has slowed then they'll probably just want to keep a closer eye on you and baby. Knowing my baby is small is quite reassuring in a way as they wouldn't necessarily have known it due to 'maternal habitus' (nice one sonographer...) and at least they can keep baby safe and sound now- plus I get to see baby every two weeks. I hope that's helped a little and I hope it turns out to be nothing to be concerned about for you.

Jeepers! Sorry for the essay! I panicked when I first found out but mil explained it all and I found the info above really eased my fears. :)

congratulations Aqua, enjoy your hugs and hope you're on your feet soon.
Lilmiss & t2d, we have to record our time on timesheets for flexi time so keeping records will be easy but it won't be easy just upping and leaving because that's not who I've ever been, if that makes sense. I will have to practice going at fixed times though for once the baby is here. I think I need a proper conversation with my manager on Monday before I have a chat with the Doctor on Tuesday, hopefully it will reassure me that a staged return will work in reality. I don't think they are planning on covering me in this role as I'm covering someone else who's on a project and they've already got 2 people doing my old job. I think they think i'll get all the really important stuff done, they can tick over the rest whilst i'm off and i'll be back in time to kick off the major bits in time when I've finished maternity leave - no pressure.

just remembered what else I was going to say - I've been very MSE today, when I was having a sort out a while back I found 2 brushed cotton sheets which had only been used once or twice because after insisting that we buy them hubby decided they were too hot. Today I've cut them up and made two flat sheets for the cot bed, and have two fitted sheets for the crib ready to hem and elasticate once I've bought the mattress tomorrow and checked I've got my measurements right. I've also taken the tab tops off the curtains which came with the bedding set bought for the nursery, so tomorrow i'll get the curtain tape and shorten them. Just trying to decide whether to try and jazz them up as they seem quite plan or whether to go with the less is more principle. Waste not want not.

Wow TCD thanks for that, it's helped a lot. I didn't have my usual midwife as she's on annual leave so had someone covering. She did say it's probably just a case of 2 people measuring differently. But better to check just in case. They use the fundal height not the old fashioned method so does go on my BMI. Also head was down at 30 weeks but palpable but this week heads engaged 2/5 so the head 3/5s in the pelvis so I'm hoping that would make a difference.

Nice to know someone else is going through it. Midwife was lovely but didn't really explain a lot just said there should be more than 1cm growth in 4 weeks and I'm now measuring under for weeks so just to be on safe side she would send me for a scan.

What do they measure and do they give u a rough estimation of weight? I'm 35 weeks tomorrow anyway so hopefully it may just be a small baby but nothing wrong.

Thanks again it's really helped x

Hey disney, I have the opposite issue to you (she's a bit of a fatty) but I had a growth scan yesterday and was given an estimated weight for the first time so I would assume they'll do the same for you.

I think they use the femur length, head and abdominal circumferences to estimate the weight as those are the measurements she took. At my hospital they plot them on a graph and you can see what percentile your baby falls into x

I'm glad they're taking such good care of you x

Thanks for that Purcy. Nice to know they should hopefully give me a weight estimate. I have a graph which they plot when they measure so I'm assuming they will plot where I am after the scan.

My friend who was due last week was measuring slightly over every time she got measured but they don't send for scans here if you measure over. It's funny different places do things differently.

    Thanks again Purcy.x
  • It's basically a thorough ultrasound- like the 20 week anomaly scan. They measure baby's head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length. They also estimate weight and then plot it onto your chart- my baby is currently measuring at 2lbs 10oz (at 30+5, am now 31+6 and due next scan on 18th). They check that the placenta is functioning well (blood flow through the cord to baby etc.) and then they check baby's wellbeing so blood flow to the brain and heart, if bladder and stomach are full from swallowing amniotic fluid etc. They asked me what my nuchal and blood test result came back as (from 12 week tests) to see if downs was a possibility. Obviously it still is (my risk was 1 in 5000 i think...) but as the chance is so slim they are more of the opinion that baby is just small as everything else is exactly right. It is worrying but there is so much variation in mws, drs, fetal position, your position etc. that there's a lot to take comfort in!

I have to admit the downs question worried the hell out of me but luckily mil was there to reassure me it was standard as it determines how they continue to monitor you if baby is scanned on small side. If downs risk high and baby small they monitor you more than I am being monitored. Thought I'd tell you that though, not to worry you but just in case they ask and don't explain why they're asking like my sonographer & doctor did! :)
