Hen night: am I being tight?

To be honest it all boils down to what people want to do and what they are comfortable with and how they want their engagement and wedding to be like. As I said before most of my friends had engagement parties, I always went to the party and with a present. I havent a clue what tradition is when it comes to getting engaged, now or back then. Im not married and Ive never been but for me personally it would very much depend on what I (and the other person) wanted to do, I wouldnt really care about tradition. I would think as well, just because some people have engagement parties and others dont, it doesnt mean its either the norm or not the norm. It might be what people do in certain parts of the country and other people dont bother. Some people like a good party. I like a party as much as the next person but I never had a party to celebrate any significant big birthday although I did go out on each occasion. My mum didnt either and neither did my brother. I know people who had parties for their 16th, 18th, 21st, 30th and 40th. Thats their own personal choice and if they were happy with that, fair enough.
Its obvious there will always be differing opinions on anything wedding related, you only need to look at the weddings board to see that. I dont have a lot of excess funds so I wouldnt be going along to a wedding with a £100 gift, neither would I be going along with a new outfit, but I would always take a gift along. A hen night would also very much depend on how much it cost and how much I had spare. I would also take along a gift to an engagement party if I got an invite to one.
A friend of mines brother had his stag weekend in NY, cost quite a lot of money and my friend put it on his CC and spent some time paying it off, but thats what he was comfortable with and he earns enough to be able to put it on credit and pay it back. That would be out of the question for me.0
