  • Well it's been a crappy week so far!

Following my fall on Sunday night I felt really rough as the day went on Monday, like fluey and achy from the fall. I started to feel sick and then I had a bad night Monday night and I was awake From 2-4am with stomach pains; I was terrified! I felt a bit better in Tuesday morning so I went to work but I text the midwife again for advice but felt sick all morning. The midwife came out to check me again Tuesday lunch and the heartbeat sounds good still but she suggested I rested for the afternoon so I didn't go back into work and I have been off since with diarrhoea and pains. It looks like it is just a bug which is totally unrelated to the pregnancy & fall and I'm just putting 2 and 2 together worrying myself. Yesterday was an awful day, I felt shocking and have hardly eaten since Monday so that probably adds to my weakness.

I have read that the baby should be fine, even though I have a bug. Our bodies are clever enough to give all the goodness they get to the baby first and us second; the downside to that is that it takes longer for the mum-to-be to recover. I feel on the mend today so hopefully will be better for tomorrow. I have felt movements which have been a great reassurance too.

I never get tummy bugs so this has been rubbish timing. Also I am not getting paid for the sickness as my employer has a rule that only the first 10 days are paid in a rolling 12 month period. I have never been anywhere near the threshold previously but I had 10 days off when I first got pregnant when I had OHSS from the IVF treatment so I'm over and above now 😕 It's a bit rubbish.

On the car front, I have a Nissan Juke, the boot is tiny so we'll have to see what prams fit in, as I don't want to have to change car anytime soon as it's nearly paid off.

Aren't there special rules about sick leave when it's pregnancy related?
  • There are in my work & I'm sure there should be everywhere. When I had sickness following my clomid treatment it didn't count towards my sickness leave as they classed it as pregnancy related and also when I was off with my migraine a couple of weeks ago, which was definiatly pregnancy related. You're prone to more illnesses while pregnant, as you say danielley, the baby takes all the good stuff & we're left feeling rubbish, you shouldn't be left without pay when you're unwell due to pregnancy. Maybe check with your HR dept or midwife?

I was looking at the adverse/winter weather policy in work yesterday, it states if the weather is bad, as in large amount of snow fall, pregnant staff are not expected to go to any risks to get into work in such circumstances. I phoned HR to query if this happened if the day would need to be taken as leave or would be paid, it is apparently at the managers discretion but if they're telling you not to come in I'm sure you could push for it to be paid. Just something I found yesterday & thought I'd let you all know or you to check in advance of there being bad weather. Wouldn't want anyone struggling in to work in bad weather if intact you could stay at home & still be paid!

1 last thing.....had an email from New Look, have 50% off some items online today & for once it includes maternity, got jumpers, dresses and a few coats, thought it could be useful if anyone is struggling to fit in there winter coat from last year! Don't forget quidco....this is MSE after all!
  • The HR lady is new, but she said that although my sickness wouldn't count towards any disciplinary action, it would still be unpaid.

I am considering speaking to one of the directors to see if I can work the time back so that I don't lose out financially; this director is also over HR and she may not be aware that I am not being paid so may waiver it all. I am a manager and do not get overtime and do work above my hours occasionally so I hope there will at least be some flexibility.

I'm feeling much better still, Just having a Downton marathon!

Princess Kate I'm just browsing New Look now on my phone as I need some pyjamas, but my bag keeps emptying at the checkout!!! Arrggh! :)
  • Tilly, not sure if you are planning on breastfeeding, as it's not a good idea to be offering expressed milk earlier than 6 weeks due to nipple confusion.

I guess it also depends what your baby as like as mine had colic and cried for 2-3 hours every night till about 3 months old so I would never had felt comfortable with leaving him with anyone.
Also depends on if you have a csection and i don't know if you would feel recovered enough to attend. Also everyone is different with babies some people may feel unable to leave their baby at that age but everyone is different.

Thanks for your advice Jedi :) it's really difficult to predict what life will be like then! I want to try breast feeding but I'm not going to torture myself if it doesn't work for me for whatever reason. I'm not planning a c-section but I suppose you never know if you'll need one. I'm not going to leave baby overnight, we (me, DH, my mum and baby) will all stay at the holiday flat. I'm wondering whether it might be sensible to say we'll come to the ceremony and the breakfast, but opt out of the evening do. Who knows?!

I find it a doddle to be honest; it's actually a Golf chassis with a bigger boot, so not a huge car overall despite the massive load space. The back is pretty vertical like a lot of estates, which makes rear visibility and parking much better than a saloon, for example. Anyway, it also has parking beepers and the passenger side mirror automatically tilts downwards when you go into reverse, both of which are very handy for parking :-)

Saying that though I've never really had a really small car, apart from Polo I learned to drive in. Honda Civic, then Nissan Qashqai and now the Skodabeast. The Skoda is a bit of a dadmobile and does make me feel old before my time but I don't care about that! I'd much rather have something boring and practical than small and girly and have taken that approach throughout my 20s especially since getting dogs!

Get yourself to Available Car Castle Donington and explore loads of different cars. Test drive a few to see how you get on with driving them, then take what you've learned back for a proper car hunt :-)

I'd say rear doors would be top of my list to get, even if you're not that fussed about a big boot. As I said, I can't see me moving from an estate now!

Thanks for this Pington :) I'm liking the idea of a bit of car window shopping and test driving! I'll have to drag my DH over there next time we have a few spare hours at the weekend!
  • Princess Kate - Glad your scan went well :) I'm back in three weeks for another look too but nothing to worry about it seems. I have my 'travel system' already too and like Pington it's an icandy, but mine's the peach. I love it :)

Pington - No dark line on my tummy (yet!) but you're a few weeks ahead of me and having twins so I guess they're both factors! Is anyone using any special tummy stretch mark creams? I'm not but I'm not very bumpy yet!

Thanks for all your comments re cars. Aunty Pickle, I didn't know you could retro fit the Isofix fittings but that is worth bearing in mind. I wish you could retro fit back doors too!

Jane - I've read somewhere about switching to non-unwired bras but I don't know why as my existing bras are not uncomfortable and non-unwired bras are really not appealing! So I haven't changed!

Missymoo - I am the laziest person so no exercise for me and no advice on that one, sorry!

AFM I had my flu jab this afternoon and I have my MATB1 form, yay!

Tilly - I just bought a cheap stretch mark cream from Savers (thinks its called 'Just for Mums?) and also an oil, although I don't really use the oil as it takes ages to soak in! I think any will do though to be honest, even just a moisturiser or cocoa butter, not necessarily an expensive one like Bio-oil, as its all about keeping the skin supple. I started lathering it on every day as soon as I found out I was pregnant, as the sooner you do it the better apparently. If you wait until you've got a bump your skin has already stretched and so is potentially more likely to mark. However on the other hand, some people will still get stretch marks no matter how much cream or oils they put on as some of us are just prone to get them. I was keen to start early and use it as a preventative measure as I think I may fall in this category as I have stretch marks on my legs that have been there for years.
  • I collected my MATB1 form today, this feels like a big thing to me. The official, you're having a baby & need time off work to look after it. Funny how it still refers to the time after having the baby as confinement!

I have some bio oil but I haven't been using it, i'm bad, I also already have a few little marks appearing. Ah well, they're my stripes & I've earned them!

We've had a look at prams, we had decided on the Oyster 2 but then we looked at the iCandy Peach which we really liked but I found the base really heavy to lift when folded and as we're staying team yellow we'd have to go for a neutral colour even though they have so many lovely colours to chose from. There is a new version of the Strawberry coming out before christmas, Strawberry 2. Much lighter than the Peach and the pram carry cot bit turns into the pushchair seat so nothing extra to store when they move into the pushchair. Quite a bit cheaper than the Peach too, but again theres the colour issue. With the Oyster you buy the colour pack separately and they aren't expensive so is something we could buy after baby is here.

    Sorry for rambling on!
