  • Hi everyone

I’m home and all is well :) such a relief, I’d really got it in my head that there was a problem, partially because I’m not feeling as much movement as I think I should, but I’ve found out my placenta is at the front and the consultant showed me baby kicking away at it and I couldn’t feel anything. She said I probably won’t spot a pattern or routine in her movements til 28 weeks so that was reassuring.

It’s nice to catch up with you all and glad to hear generally all is well with everyone too :)

Missymoo – Don’t worry, I assumed we’d ‘cross posted’! Aww your class sound lovely and how thoughtful are the girls that carried the equipment for you! Make sure you do take them up on that offer!

My work is the same as Kate’s in that I have to tell them by the 25th week when I want to start maternity leave, however my work say that they don’t expect you say how long that you expect to be off for and instead they assume that you will take the full year.

You have my sympathy’s re maternity pay woes. I only get SMP too but the only way that we can afford me to take a year is because DH gets a bonus from work at the end of March. I feel like we should spend it on ‘something’ rather than on day to day expenses, but I guess it’s just one year and an important one.

I only work three days a week at the mo so that would be ideal with a little one, but I’m thinking about looking for a new job after maternity leave so I’ll have see what’s available. My work is about an hour away so something closer would be better.

Re childcare - my mum can’t help out due to her variable work shifts and my in-laws have already said that they won’t help (!) so we need to bear in mind the costs of nursery fees.

Pington – I’m glad you still went for your 4D scan, I wondered whether you might put it off til your parents could make it but hey you can always go again! At my scan today the consultant put the picture on to 4D briefly and it was nowhere near as clear as the picture at the private scan place so I’m even more tempted to go again now, maybe at Christmas or early in the New Year.

Aww how lovely will your baby girls looked dressed up as bridesmaids! How is the wedding planning coming along? Mostly importantly how are you going to choose a dress?! But maybe you’ve done that already!

Good luck on the next thread – see you there soon!

Milly – Sounds like your job situation worked out for the best then! I agree with you about not wanting to be influenced by anyone else’s opinions on names. Are you not finding out if baby is a boy or girl? So you need double the options! A week today til your scan!

Princess Kate – Yay for the headaches subsiding but boo for the return of morning sickness! Bless you, you’re not having it easy – I hope your OH is looking after you at home!

I’m annoyed I completely forgot to ask about the MAT1B form today! I made a doctor’s appointment for Friday just in case but I was hoping to be able to cancel it. I might try contacting my midwife and see if she’ll just leave it at the doctors for me too – good idea!

Good idea re annual leave at the end of maternity leave too! You’ve made me think about taking the most of next December as annual leave then I would actually have some money for Christmas! It seems logical to start back at work at the beginning of a new year but depressing too!

Good luck for your scan tomorrow!

Aunty-Pickle – Thanks for sharing that info about car seats. I hadn’t heard anything about that so def need to look into it!

You’ve reminded me I wanted to ask everyone about cars. I have a pretty old car with no back doors and no isofix (but it’s a reliable good runner and I’m happy with it!) but I’m assuming this won’t be ideal once baby is here. The easiest thing to do might be to swap cars with my DH (his car has back doors and Isofix) but he’s set on buying me a new car. I obviously like this idea but equally money will be tighter once I’m on maternity leave so I don’t know what to do. I think long term we both need cars with back doors and Isofix as the thought was I will do nursery drop offs and he will do pick ups. What are you all doing re cars?

Jedi – You’re on the list as team yellow so I guess you’re not finding out what you’re having? Would you use the name Scarlett now if baby’s a girl despite your MIL’s comments? For what it’s worth I think it’s a nice name!

We’re hoping to convert (part of) our garage too! We want a utility room and downstairs loo – what are you planning?

Yep not finding out the sex as it will be the only surprise at the birth

Our other girls name was Freya and neither of them will be used for the second if a girl as feel like we need to start afresh.

I have a small 3 bed house one of the bedrooms is my office ideally we need this space back as baby gets bigger so garage conversion would be to an office.

  • Hi Pington, that sounds like a very sensible and family friendly car :) at the risk of sounding like a really pathetic girl how do you find driving it and especially parking it? I have a Peugeot 206 at the mo and it's basically the only car I've really driven - My previous car was another 206! I'm thinking about getting maybe a Ford Focus or something like that but even they seem big!

Also I meant to ask you ladies - DH and I have been invited to a wedding at the end of April next year so baby will be 4-6 weeks old. Children aren't invited which is fair enough, but I don't know how feasible it will be for us to go. It's on the south coast and we're in the Midlands but DH's family have a holiday flat only a mile or maybe two away from the venue so we can stay there and make a long weekend out of it - at least that's what we would do if it was just us! It's a typical civil ceremony do I guess - ceremony, breakfast and evening do all in one hotel and we're invited to the whole thing. My mum has booked a few days off work so she can come with us and look after baby while we're there, but how likely is that? Am I going to want to / be able to leave my baby for that long? How will my mum cope? How will baby cope??! I just don't know what life will be like then so I don't know what we can commit to! I should make it clear we do really want to go to wedding, I'm not trying to get out of it! Maybe we should just go for the day bit and not the evening? What would you do? X

Tilly, not sure if you are planning on breastfeeding, as it's not a good idea to be offering expressed milk earlier than 6 weeks due to nipple confusion.

I guess it also depends what your baby as like as mine had colic and cried for 2-3 hours every night till about 3 months old so I would never had felt comfortable with leaving him with anyone.
Also depends on if you have a csection and i don't know if you would feel recovered enough to attend. Also everyone is different with babies some people may feel unable to leave their baby at that age but everyone is different.

  • Car wide we have vauxhall corsa 5 door brought this a year before trying for baby number one, it's small and cheap to run so we won't be getting anything bigger. It has isofix but we didn't use with the seat we wanted. It has a small boot with only a few from birth prams that fit it, we got a baby jogger which does then we got a quinny zapp which folds down really small which I keep in the car at all times.

  • Morning everyone,

hope you are all feeling well at the moment, I was wondering today, have you all switched over to a non wired bra ? I know we're supposed to but they are so ugly and un-supportive that I haven't yet ! I did get one of my nursing bra's from DD out today but gave up eventually as it felt uncomfortable.

I'm feeling a bit grumpy today as nothing fits me (I had my first in office day on Monday in nearly a month vs holiday or working from home) and my proper work clothes wouldn't fasten !, my big toe is really hurting (bizarre, but apparently not uncommon in pregnancy) & now this bra thing is bothering me too - all silly small things but I think my hormones must be playing up. Aarrghhhh !
  • I didn't know you were supposed to switch to non wire but makes sense as I have been uncomfortable. Only 16 weeks but boobs already feel about two sizes bigger. In my last pregnany I got such bad back ache from 20 weeks that I just wore sports bras not sure what to do this time around.

  • Evening ladies

Hope you are all having a good Wednesday.

jane I haven't bought any new bras yet but really need to. However I am not going to go wireless - I'm not uncomfortable with the wires and like you I don't find the wireless ones comfortable.

As for cars - we currently own a Mini Cooper so definitely need a new car. We are currently thinking of the Audi Q3. I like it cause its a little higher than a standard car so less strain on the back and also has a good boot. Or alternatively the Audi A3 estate or the skoda Octavia. It's all about boot space in our place. Those double buggies are not little.

I've had a bit of a rough last week but feeling much better today. Had a big growing spurt last Wednesday which was quite painful and caused issues with walking. Then I was really uncomfortable so couldn't sleep Thursday or Friday (and I mean NO SLEEP - walking round house, reading, etc all night). So by Saturday I was so exhausted I became very unwell. Couldn't temperature control myself at all. Had serious shakes and was sick all day Saturday and Sunday.

I have felt better since being able to sleep again which is good.

Now I have started with nose bleeds! Woke up at 4am yesterday with blood all over pillow and today had another bleed during a meeting at work. So much blood!!!
But at least I'm not feeling sick and shaking anymore. Pregnancy is not glamourous at all!!!

We have still yet to buy anything for the babies and I'm starting to get a bit anxious as christmas is coming and I won't want to do baby shopping then and after that I expect I'll be big which will be frustrating to shop with.

Anyway - hope you are all well.

I'd certainly recommend the Octavia estate, Carrot! The boot is huge (actually one of the biggest estate boots despite it not being an especially big car; I don't know how they do it) and you get great value for money compared to a Q3. If I'd had a bigger budget I'd have gone for a Superb estate rather than Octavia for the even bigger boot, but that's because I have two dogs to fit in as well as double buggy etc. Skoda makes good twinmobiles :-)
  • Aw Carrot, glad you're feeling better but you really seem to have been through it! Make sure you take t easy, well as easy as you can, to allow yourself to catch up after all that lost sleep.

I've got a stinking cold so feeling a bit sorry for myself! Got 2 days off work now so planning on taking it easy!

We've started to make a list of baby items we ned to get, a lot of people have said to tell them items we need which they want to buy for us so want to think of all of the smaller things as well as the bigger things like pram & bedroom furniture. There is a lot to think about, going to get googling and get a proper list of everything so at least we have an idea of how much it's all going to cost us!

Has anyone looked at prams/pushchairs yet?

I've got my buggy already, but that's mainly because twin buggies have fewer options and someone I knew was selling one second hand. It's an iCandy Pear.

Has anyone else started to get the dark line on their tummy yet? Mine has started to come, but I have a cross rather than just a line; one vertical line and one horizontal. Is that normal?!
  • Glad all was ok at the scan, Princess, and well done for staying team yellow! I have my scan on Friday, can't wait! And the fact you have to go back in 2 weeks means you get another glimpse of baby before the big day which can't be bad :) Get better soon, take it easy for the next few days.

Nicky - nice to see you here again! I've no idea what else I would do apart from teaching... after my dreadful Sunday I've had a decent week so far, I'm just trying to stay positive now and see where things take me. I think I will definitely try and get part time, however if this can't be granted then I think it will be time for me to find something else. What that something else is though, I haven't a clue!

For those talking about cars and moving up to a bigger one - I drive a 16 seater minibus at work and sometimes I actually find it easier to park than my car! Reason being is that it has more mirrors, plus being higher up I get a better view of the road. Although I did nearly get stuck in a tight car park the other day, luckily my sixth form girls were on hand to guide me :p

Our car is 2006 and doesn't have Isofix. Will be going to Mothercare / Babies R Us after Christmas to find out what is available to us and whether we can get Isofix installed. We're not in a position to change car, plus its a decent family sized car anyways so as long as we get the Isofix sorted it will be fine.

Ladies, new question for you - are any of you exercising, and if so, what do you do and how often? I used to run and go to the gym/fitness classes before baby, however I did end up stopping before we got our BFP (ashamedly due to laziness/not enough time and other poor excuses :o). I've therefore been worried about getting back in to exercising as they say if you exercised regularly before then you can carry on, but I actually hadn't done any vigorous exercise for about a month before getting pregnant! I'm now a bit concerned as I know I'm putting on excess weight, and whilst my baby bump is growing so is the layer of fat over the top of it :o I've found that I'm getting out of breath really quickly, and yesterday I thought my heart was going to burst out of my chest after thinking I would be good and take the stairs at the train station... 200 stairs later I regretted my decision! You'd never guess I'm a PE teacher :o I'm going to start swimming, but I just wondered if any of you do anything a bit more vigorous and challenging?
