12-24 weeks pregnant (part 3)

It's very quiet on the next thread up so I'm coming out of lurkdom to join in the chat. You don't need a full bladder at the 20 week scan, good job too as they press pretty hard with the scanner thing and if baby is being a monkey like mine it could take a while to get all the measurements!
In terms of mat leave I'm having a year off. I work for the NHS so will have OK income for 6 months then SMP for a further 3. The last 3 months are unpaid but if my wishes to work part-time are granted I'll only be earning £500 a month after childcare so £1500 seems an OK amount of money to lose to have an extra 3 months off (if you can afford it of course). We had wanted a baby for a while and then took several months to get pregnant so we've had a bit of time to save up!
Sorry to hear some of you will be going back to work far sooner than you would like to but I have been told that it always feels too soon! Any ideas what you would do as an alternative job Missy? Or anyone else planning to go part-time, what will you do if your work says no?
I'm planning to use my accrued annual leave to only go back 3 days a week for 2 months at first. I have a feeling my request to work 3 days a week may be turned down but they would probably negotiate on 4 so I can get used to doing 3 and then step it up to 4 if need be! Just so many unknowns!!0 -
Hi Pington, that sounds like a very sensible and family friendly car
at the risk of sounding like a really pathetic girl how do you find driving it and especially parking it? I have a Peugeot 206 at the mo and it's basically the only car I've really driven - My previous car was another 206! I'm thinking about getting maybe a Ford Focus or something like that but even they seem big!
Also I meant to ask you ladies - DH and I have been invited to a wedding at the end of April next year so baby will be 4-6 weeks old. Children aren't invited which is fair enough, but I don't know how feasible it will be for us to go. It's on the south coast and we're in the Midlands but DH's family have a holiday flat only a mile or maybe two away from the venue so we can stay there and make a long weekend out of it - at least that's what we would do if it was just us! It's a typical civil ceremony do I guess - ceremony, breakfast and evening do all in one hotel and we're invited to the whole thing. My mum has booked a few days off work so she can come with us and look after baby while we're there, but how likely is that? Am I going to want to / be able to leave my baby for that long? How will my mum cope? How will baby cope??! I just don't know what life will be like then so I don't know what we can commit to! I should make it clear we do really want to go to wedding, I'm not trying to get out of it! Maybe we should just go for the day bit and not the evening? What would you do? X0 -
The letter I received with my scan appointment said to have a comfortably full bladder if scan was before 38 weeks, my friend said hers was too full & got in the way & from your comments I'm not going to worry about it. I was so desperate after my 12 week scan I ran so fast out of the scanning room to the loo!
As you may gather by the time of this post, I'm feeling rubbish, throat is so sore, typical. Going to get a drink & some paracetamol & try to get back to sleep for a bit. It's all good practice for being awake in the night I suppose!
Re. Cars. I have a 5 door Clio, with isofix. Boot is an ok size but I had a courtesy megane a couple of weeks ago & I loved it, boot was huge too without the car being too big. Mine is only 2 years old in March but I think I'll look to change it just after the baby is here. A slightly bigger problem for us regarding fri I g is that my husband doesn't drive, so how I'm going to get to hospital when the time comes hasn't quite been worked out yet!0 -
That should be 28 weeks.... Tired, sorry!0

I find it a doddle to be honest; it's actually a Golf chassis with a bigger boot, so not a huge car overall despite the massive load space. The back is pretty vertical like a lot of estates, which makes rear visibility and parking much better than a saloon, for example. Anyway, it also has parking beepers and the passenger side mirror automatically tilts downwards when you go into reverse, both of which are very handy for parking :-)
Saying that though I've never really had a really small car, apart from Polo I learned to drive in. Honda Civic, then Nissan Qashqai and now the Skodabeast. The Skoda is a bit of a dadmobile and does make me feel old before my time but I don't care about that! I'd much rather have something boring and practical than small and girly and have taken that approach throughout my 20s especially since getting dogs!
Get yourself to Available Car Castle Donington and explore loads of different cars. Test drive a few to see how you get on with driving them, then take what you've learned back for a proper car hunt :-)
I'd say rear doors would be top of my list to get, even if you're not that fussed about a big boot. As I said, I can't see me moving from an estate now!0 -

*delurking from TTC thread*
I've just passed my test this August and bought a Citroen C1 in April. The next month we decided to TTC so heaven knows where a baby would fit in my car :eek::eek: My sister jokes that I'm so tall I drive it from the back seat! OH has a Toyota Auris which is wonderful. It's big but doesn't look it and it's got all of the bells and whistles like climate control and stuff. I'll inherit that car when it's paid off in 3 years and we will sell mine. I don't know what I will do when that happens as my prized feature in my C1 is my auxiliary cable so I can play music through my phone! I don't do CD players, I get bored of the same tracks too quickly!

just re: cars
we have a VW Passat estate and an Audi A3. I tend to drive the Passat and find it really easy to drive and park - it's not too wide which helps. I guess it's just what you get used to. I started off in a little polo, and I've had a Golf, driven hubby's Audis but my favourite was a bright yellow little Lupo!!! (Yes, you can probably spot a trend in the VW/Audi stakes!) Our old Audi we drove for over 260,000 miles and our current Passat has over 160,000! They (and Skodas) are notoriously good for being "work-horses" in terms of long-standing reliability. (It helps that OH is brilliant with cars so services /maintains and fixes them himself)
My brother had a Ford Focus C-Max which allows for three car seats in the back. My other brother had a Zafira at the start and has had various others.
Oh, just a thought re Isofix... it is possible to get the fixings fitted retrospectively. So our Audi has them but the Passat doesn't. Instead of thinking about changing the Passat, we are going to get the fixings and OH will fit them - I think they're about £30. I guess even if you had them fitted professionally, that would still be a lot cheaper than buying a new car!!Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock0 -
Had my scan, all is fine, got to go back in 2 weeks for them to get a better view of a couple of things but nothing to worry about. As soon as baby appeared on the screen it was waving to us, moved around loads, so much so she had to lower my head to try & get a better view. We stayed team yellow. Baby was playing with the cord & didn't keep its legs still! Funny & cute to see!0

hooray Princess Kate - that's fab news! and if you need another scan then at least it means you get to see baby again!
Danielley - hope you are feeling better after your fall recently.
Trixsie, glad you had a good scan
Missymoo - hope you're able to think things through and have a good meeting with the Head before Christmas.
When I submit my MatB1 form, I have to specify when I'm planning on returning to work after mat leave. I don't know! Hopefully after OH does some sums we'll have a clearer idea. I had been looking around for another job anyway when I fell pregnant so as I said before, this might be an "opportunity" to take a mini career break and start again after baby is older. I've been in current job 4 years and as much as I love it the nurses I work for drive me mad!!!!
Tilly - at least you have some reassurance now about the placenta and lack of movement. I felt a few possible baby movements last week but nothing since. I admit, I'm not unduly worried about it - hope I stay that way!!!
Re: Wedding. Hmmm, that's a tricky one because, as you say, you have no idea how you / baby are going to be. We have a friend's wedding almost similar timing in that baby will be ~5/6 weeks (if it arrives near due date!!!) But they are happy to have children and babies there so that wouldn't matter. The only "downside" is that it is about 80mins drive from our house so too far to be able to nip back if I'm feeling tired or whatever. We are considering renting a holiday cottage nearby and making a week of it but aren't really sure about that either!Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock0 -
