Why don't you ask your gym if it is normal?

Thanks - I might give this a try and see. At the time I got my first programme the guy warned me about anaerobic exercise (where you go above 80% of your max heart rate) and I'm not sure if this advice still stands.

At the minute I'm run/walking 5k in about 45 minutes. I tried timing myself but found it fiddly so I just run till I can't run any more and walk till I've recovered. I'm figuring my time will come down and that's how I'll know I'm running more :) I think I'll alternate some shorter run/walks as well, maybe around 2.5k, just to see what that does...

I have completed day 1 of week 6!
My legs still hadn't recovered from sunday - week 5
but I took the advice and slowed down. I was still wheezing as if I was smoking (I gave up in Jan - hence the need to lose weight by running), but i did complete the 28 mins.

belfastgirl23 - there are some free starter plans on Runners world

I got my 'Running made easy' from dvd.co.uk - it was cheaper than ebay!

Thanks Ros the runners world programme is lovely and simple, most of the ones I saw I figured I'd need a maths degree to even try them. It feels like it goes pretty fast to me but maybe doing it three times a week is the key (I've been doing 1-2 pw so far cos I've been fitting it into my normal gym routine). Does anyone else find the focus on timing difficult? I'm still figuring whether to go this way or just keep building up on a distance instead. It does seem all the advice is to do it by timing admittedly so I guess it's a bit high handed to think you know better when you've never run before :)

Well done on the smoking and running by the way. What kind of age/weight are you? I'm 37 and :(:(:( not far off 12 stone...which of course isn't making it any easier.

PS I just looked at week six. Flippin 'eck. Please tell me you're 21 and 8 stone :) Really well done!

Mmm, you lot are inspiring me, annoying. :D

I have taken up badminton with my OH recently to get fitter and we really enjoy it and he wants us to start jogging/running. Its never really appealed to me but we have a nice park near us and I suppose if I start gradually, I might get to like it and it burns soooo many calories! Think I shall look at the website runnersworld.

Keep up the good work everyone and I shall let you know what happens. :D

Hi Belfastgirl - Week 6 of 'running made easy' is not as scary as runners world as it is a 10 week plan - (but still terrifies me)
I'm a 34 year old 13 stone ex-smoker - I was 11 1/2 stone this time last year! Carrying the extra weight and running isn't as much fun - but with a good support bra - and the prospect of skinny legs in the near future - it's just an annoyance - soon I hope to be running more like a gazelle - and less like an aunty!

LouBlue - give it a try - it's cheaper than gym membership and you can run any time you like - you don't have to wait for a Badminton court to be free!

I used to do all of my running in Richmond Park before I moved out here. As my running improved to 25 - 30 miles per week, I expected to get slimmer legs. Instead, they look like a rugby players.
I`ve got heart failure now and really struggle to manage 40 mins and have to walk on the hills, but still manage to do at least 2 hours a week.
It does get easier, so keep at it.

I don't want rugby player legs!

I would love to get to the point of having rugby players legs :(

Anyway I decided to try the runners world schedule (thanks Ros). I started with week two cos I have been sort of doing week one for a while. Actually the advice to slow down really helped although I was going only marginally over walking speed. I did 4 times walk one minute run two minutes and another 4 times walk 90secs, run 90secs. I'm pretty pleased with myself. i went on and did my normal gym workout too which I'm extra pleased about. I think in the end I ran/walked about 3k in 24 mins :)

thanks for all the advice and encouragement, it did really help me to stick to it.

And Ros I was around 10 and a half stone this time last year. I'm pretty mad at myself :(
