try specifc stretches for your hamstrings. Most people's are too tight - I know mine are practially rigid!

Stand on a step with toes on and heels off, lower and raise your heels

    Flex and clench your toes

Squat down and try to keep your feet flat on the floor

Alot fo the stretches people do before and after exercise are pretty useless - stretching is good but it needs to be done right. I'd recomend getting out a Yoga DVD and learning 3 -5 basic poses from a warm up session. That will help flexibility far more. I use Yoga for surfers before and after Gym/Run/heavy day at office to help my muscles. The warm up is about 10 minutes and after 5-6 viewings I've learnt most of the poses.

Thank you - that's really useful. I warmed up following instructions in my book yesterday and it didn't help me at all. I must be doing something wrong, I'm sure. Off to look for Yoga DVD's ;)

I did my 2nd session of run 2 mins, walk 2 mins - total of 28mins.

    It's feeling easier already.

I am on week 4 of 'Running made easy' and I never thought that shins had anything that could slightly hurt until now! The book is great though and i am actually enjoying the run/walk plan

I am using the gym treadmill - are you using the great outdoors?

I had the gait analysis at a sport shop - it was free if you intended to look for new trainers. Unfortunately I have big feet for a girl - so they had a very small selection in my size.

    It's a great book huh?

I am on week 3 but I use the great outdoors. I love it specially as it's not too hot

I don't have a problem with my shins - just my blooming calves.

I've been using the treadmill but intend to move on to the great outdoors when I've finished the initial plan.

How are you finding the switch from walking to running on the treadmill? It is driving me mad - I feel like I am constantly watching the clock - and it doesn't speed up as quickly as I want it to. I might try the great outdoors very soon (weather permitting)

    Hi RosWright,

I don't have anyu trouble with the treadmill, tend to go from walking at 3.5 mph up to between 5.5-6.5 mph whilst running.
