What type of surface are you running on? The impact on your body when running on concrete, or paving is much greater than when running on grass. Maybe a few laps around the park might be less damaging than running down the road.

When I started running about six years ago I managed to mess my knees up pretty bad. Like other posters I got my feet and running style analysed and got some asics which were designed for my gait. After this I haven't had many problems. I also think that running experience probably helps as you develop an individual running style which is efficent and appropriate to your body.

Thanks - will give it a go. I have just a pair of basic nike running trainers. How much does it cost to have your running style analysed?

my husband took up running and found things improved when he had the right shoes. worth spending on getting the right ones. his have some fancy gel stuff, I think. anyway he's worn his out, but we're off to florida next week and hope to pick up a bargain there especially with the dollar exchange rate being so good.

Karrie - are you anywhere near a branch of Sweatshop?. They will check you out free. Most other good running shops will as well. Not somewhere like JJB though.
Once you find ones to suit you, you will often find that a new model comes out shortly afterwards. Then you can buy the old model from places like Bourne Sports for up to 50% off.

Just had a look, there is on a few miles away so I might go there if I get a chance. Thanks for that. What do they do? Do you run on a treadmill?

I don`t know if they all have a treadmill. I`ve heard of them letting you run in the street to watch you. They will be faster than you so not much point in doing a runner. I suggest you buy a running log to look back on as you progress. It`s fun to see that a run that nearly kills you now will be regarded as `just 5 miles today` next year. Enjoy, but don`t try too much too soon.

I just did my first session of week 6 this morning.

2 mins running, 2 mins walking (7 times, 28 mins)

Was really worried about it this morning but I actually did it. Lots of huffing and puffing and plenty of sweat but hey I got there.:j

Just need to keep at it now.

    :T :T :T WELL DONE YOU!!!

I cannot imagine me doing 2 mins run and 2 mins walk. I really can't. I am on 60 secs run and 2 mins walk x 5 at the moment. It's increases to x 6 next week.

    Keep it up :D

    Thanks Karrie.

I never thought I'd do it but it is possible.

You keep going too, it can be done.

try specifc stretches for your hamstrings. Most people's are too tight - I know mine are practially rigid!

Stand on a step with toes on and heels off, lower and raise your heels

    Flex and clench your toes

Squat down and try to keep your feet flat on the floor

Alot fo the stretches people do before and after exercise are pretty useless - stretching is good but it needs to be done right. I'd recomend getting out a Yoga DVD and learning 3 -5 basic poses from a warm up session. That will help flexibility far more. I use Yoga for surfers before and after Gym/Run/heavy day at office to help my muscles. The warm up is about 10 minutes and after 5-6 viewings I've learnt most of the poses.
