Any joggers/runners out there?

Help!

I have replaced my smoking habit with running. I am just beginning (2 weeks in) and my legs feel like lead!! Apart from that, I feel great and I love doing in. In fact, I can't wait to get home so I can do my run.

Is there something that I am doing wrong?

Hi there. I have recently started running and I love it too. Unfortunately I've been ill lately so haven't been able to run for a few weeks, but when I'm better, I'll get back out there.

A great website is www.runnersworld.co.uk - it's full of handy hints for beginners and experienced runners. I have subscribed to the magazine and it's a mine of useful info.

With your legs - are you stretching properly? If I don't stretch properly, my legs ache like mad the next day.

:o erm no I am not stretching properly. But when I do (in my weak defence) it doesn't make any difference. My legs feel fine the next day, it's just during the run that the calf muscles really hurt.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi Folks, I am a keen runner. Well done on your new healthy hobby. It is quite normal to ache a bit when you are starting out. You will probably find that your aerobic fitness increases before your muscles so the it is important not to do too much too soon or you may get injured. Make sure you get adequate rest in between your sessions and you will soon be fine. Runner's World is a good sight and the Race for Life site usually has a beginners programme. All the best:T

    Hi,

I've recently started running too. I started with the programme in the book running made easy, its 10 weeks long, I'm now on week 5.

    I love it.

But I do have problems with my shins aching - any of you established runners got any suggestions?

Good luck Karrie, keep going.:j :j

  • I've been advised to take up jogging and I am going to start next week with the support of a friend.

Thanks for the "runners world" thread, I've got some great tips from it to help get us started (Haven't exercised in years).

Find a good running shop and get some trainers for your running style from the start.

(They won't be a good running shop unless they put you on a treadmill and watch you run in a number of suggested trainers).

    Well done.

Shortly after I quit smoking 14 years ago, I took up cycling.

The first few rides, I couldn't get out of my home town for the hills. Now I can go for hours.

I did a 110ml ride 4 weeks ago around the Dales (The 'etape du dales') and last week I was in France for a week around some serious hills, finishing with a 105ml ride as part of an event called the 'Ardechoise'. This Sunday I am doing an event that is being run over stage 1 of the Tour de France from London to Canterbury called the 'British Cyclosportive' and that's 120ml (But probably easier, as that's in the sissy flat south!!)

Start off small, work up gradually (Otherwise injury becomes a big problem) and set little goals.

    MOST IMPORTANT - enjoy it!!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

as Meatballs says find a good running shop and get your gait assessed and buy shoes accordingly. Make sure you're properly hydrated and that you've eaten appropriately. Please stretch and do warm ups etc for your long term health. But well done on starting and keeping it up! It will get better.

Why don't you new runners try to enter a 5k (3mile) fun run sometime in the future. Women only ones are good and you usually get a goodie bag at the finish. It's something to aim for and you feela real sense of achievement when you finish. Race for Life is a biggie but there are lots more around now so there is sure to be something local to you.
