firstly... i personally found that once i made the switch from treadmill to great outdoors, i never wanted to go back  i do find it easier to run on a treadmill now, but find it so, SO much easier to run outside. in the gym, im constantly watching the clock. outside, i run to the next tree/bench/bridge... and normally by the time i get there i've broken the pain barrier and can keep going. i just dont get that on a treadmill.

as for running shoes, if you cant get to somewhere that can assess you, look at page 100-101 of running made easy. this gives info of an easy way to measure what type of foot you have, and which type of trainer is best for you based on that.

finally, i cannot recommend events like Race for Life highly enough. we recently completed our first one, and having something to work towards really gives you the motivation to get off the sofa and go train, when all you really want to do is curl up in front of eastenders with some wine and chocolate :D my running buddy and i are now looking for another event... considering a 10k, as a step up towards a half marathon :)

    I love running outdoors too:j

I am looking to do the Hydro Active 5k in September. It's in Liverpool, Hyde Park and Birmingham and it's an all woman event. Part of your entry fee goes to your nominated charity.

Wish I could find a running buddy :o

my running buddy is a colleague and close friend. we made a joint new years resolution to get fit, which turned into a "lets do RfL", from which we discovered a love for running.

ask around friends and family - you never know, someone may just surprise you

If you are suffering pain in your shins, this may be a condition known as shin splints. There is a fine muscle that runs from your knee to your ankle on the front of your shin. There is a 'sheath' of tissue that encases this muscle and can become irritated, causing shin pain. In some runners, particularly when new to running or increasing their exercise load, the muscle sheath becomes inflamed. Reducing the exercise workload and building up gradually can help. If this does not work, you need to see your doctor!

Bizarrely, I never got this whilst training for cross-country running, but whilst swim training, particularly breast stroke!
    Good, clean fun.... :D

Oops - it could be the post running swim affecting my shins. Thanks - I may try and do less of the swimming to isolate the cause.

I've subscribed to Runner's world magazine (with my tesco clubcard vouchers) so there is no excuse to give up

Started week 5 (Running made easy) this morning - week 6 still scares me!

That's really spooky. It's my birthday next week and my partner has got me a subscription to Runners World :D

Today I start week 4 of Running Made Easy. And I agree, week 6 scares the pants of me too

I keep looking at my spreadsheet (I did one and cross each day off) and thinking "There is no way I will be able to run for 2 mins..... EVER!"

Happy birthday for next week (It's mine on Friday)

Have you signed up for a 5K or do you have a reward for yourself at the end of the program?
