tho I did do a wash and clear out some old branches in the garden with the extra 20 mins so not time entirely wasted. Gonna try running again tomorrow morning early so I can get in for the start of the m&S sale
Ros are you purposely doing leg-type exercises to build up for running? I definitely couldn't have managed an exercise bike today
Karrie on the red face thing I'm generally very very white (Irish!) but I swear I look like a tomato atop a snowman by the time I've finished. Seriously. I can't put on foundation for at least an hour after running cos it slides right off again. It's lucky I have a very high embarassment threshold for that sort of thing (and run at 7am when no one is around!)
And good luck tomorrow Michaela. I think I prefer running outdoors, less boring, though I do think it's harder on you too...let us know how you go.
Must be my Irish blood then

There are some good route mapping tools out there to plan distance like
Nike

Running 4 women

walk jog run

I also go red faced when running - with milk white legs - a very nice combination0 -
Hi all
After being really anxious I left the house at 8pm with my son who rode his bike, and I did a slowish pace as I knew there was a hill and I didnt want it to kill me, and one part of the run was a bit of a struggle but I managed to do the 3 miles in 43 minutes and 15 seconds, and it felt fantastic.
I felt not only a personal achievement but sounds stupid but feel well proud of myself, as even though I have been on the runner for a year now I really didnt think I would manage it.
My plan now is not to time myself until I have ran this route for a week and then on the last day of that week, I shall see what my time is compared to the first day.
Oh and my face looked like it was going to burst.

I did my bike ride yesterday. 10 miles in all

Took my ds with me and thought it would be fun to swap bikes about a mile from home. Well, riding a bike that is slightly too small for me sure worked my leg muscles. And the gears are rubbish too
Back to 2 min run, 2 min walk tonight. Can't wait.
How's everyone else doing?Life is like a box of chocolates, ya never know what yer gonna get

Brill, 10 miles on a bike, god I cant remember the last time I rode a bike. I might have a go at that at a later date.
Tomorrow if I am motivated I shall do my same route again, depending on the back of my thigh as its a little sore today feels like I may have pulled it.

Hi
I thought I would join in as so many of the stories ring a bell with me! About 18 months ago I joined a gym and decided to get fit. At the time I was about 11 stone and a size 14 - 16 clothes. Not huge admitedly but as my daughter was nearly 2 and I couldn't use the 'just had a child excuse any longer'!!
Anyway within a month I could run about 800m (4 min ish) on the treadmill and then run / walk to 5KM. Did the race for life last year and ran / walked it and took 37 minutes. This was in May 2006.
Really got the bug and decided to train really hard on the running front. In October 2006 I got a place in the London Marathon (I know a bit of a leap). By Feb 2007 I managed to run (not a step of walking) a half marathon in just under 2 hours. Did the marathon in 4 hours 58 minutes, so pleased - ran the first 18 miles and then ran / walked the rest.
Now I am training for 5KM / 10KM races doing several throughout the year and just trying to get faster. When doing a 10KM it is not even a question of walking at all, how my mindset has changed!!:T Can now do 5KM in under 25 minutes which I NEVER thought would happen.
Interestingly on a weight / legs issue... I am now around 10st - 10st 3 which is not a huge drop BUT I am now a size 10 (sometimes a 12 on top:rotfl: ). My legs are more muscly but substantially smaller than they were before.
The point of writing is three fold really:
1) To tell you all that no matter where you begin you won't look back and you will be amazed at how quickly you do progress. It's almost like a light bulb moment when you find a base level of fitness and a suitable stride.
2) To offer any advice to anyone (please note I am not a qualified fitness instructor). I simply know what has worked for me!
3) To put those of you who are worried about rugby legs at ease!!!:D
Take care all.

Thanks Poodlecrazy for the inspirational story! I am hoping if you can manage it so can the rest of us...
a long long way away from where you are but I was really happy with how I got on this morning. I managed to run 2min, walk 1min for 18 minutes as per runners world. When I finished this I was still about 10 mins from home at walking pace and had a bit more to give in the legs so decided to give running 3 mins a go (to reassure myself I'll be able for it on Sunday). And it worked :j :j :j :j
So a total of 15 mins run over 21 mins :T
I realised too that I am finally BELIEVING that I can run.
How are you all getting on?0 -

WoW, cant imagine I would ever do the marathan, I am considering the half marathon but just going to see how I go over the next week with my 3 mile jog.
Then the next week I am going to try and add on another mile, at the moment I am off work but after next week I am back and I work in the evenings so its difficult to keep motivated and have the time, having my daughter during the day and then when OH gets home I go to work, but I shall try and do it in between my nights off.
Just thinking I think I might blank the half marathon which takes place in october I believe cant remember now, and just aim for the race for life distance, think thats 5 miles?

Hi!
Belfastgirl: that's amazing - you are getting the bug! If you feel you have more in you then carrying on is great. Once you have a basic fitness the extra bit is largely in the head (or at least for me it is!). I try alternating between time goals and distance goals i.e. run for X minutes or run for X meters, between two trees or anything like that. This keeps things alive for me. If you are 'out' for 21 minutes and you managed to run 15 of those last time why don't you somehow try to clock up 16 minutes in 21 adding 10 seconds here and there wherever you can?
Michaela: thanks for the congrats on the marathon, got to admit it was one of the toughest experiences of my life (aside from childbirth fo course:p ). 3 miles is a long way, don't underestimate how few people can actually do that. I remember a trainer of mine telling me that it was something like 5% of Brits that could run 3 or 4 miles (sorry can't remember the exact stats), so you should feel REALLY proud of that. I was once told never to add more than 10% distance to your longest run at any one time so going from 3 to 4 miles might be a bit much, don't know just a thought. In any event make sure you go slower when you increase the distance, picking up speed later is easier.
