Hi All,
Found this thread yesterday and following a minor calf injury have started running again with the beginners programme from the Runners World site. I think the injury was caused by trying to do too much too soon so this evening have resisted the temptation to keep going and stopped while the body was in one piece. Started tonight at week 2 with Run 2 mins, walk 1 x7 and felt fine after. One day of rest and then....
Would like to do a 5k at the end of week 8 if I can find one locally in early October.0 -

Hello Hotspur,
Another newbie runner, just like me.
I was away with work for most of the week but still managed to do my running in the morning. On week 2 of race for life. I think it's walk 2 run 3 times 5 that's awaiting me tomorrow....
My legs are not causing me any grief but I get some dull muscle pain around the waist the day after I've ran. What the hell do I do to get that?
Sucking my stomach in whilst I run? :rotfl:
I'm trying to recruit friends and family to come with me but they all seem to think I've lost the plot! It'd be nice to have some company though so I'll carry on asking!0 -
I've also found it difficult to find peeps to run /train with. Most seem to go home and live an exercise free existance other than a walk or 2. Others I know are 'real' runners and are off for a 30 min run. I'll get there eventually!
I'm lucky in that there is a small gym at work with a treadmill which is good for when it is raining but I prefer running outside.
My 3rd Run 2 mins, walk 1 x7 of the week tomorrow morning if the rain stays away. I definitely feel better for it.0 -
Just back from a few days in London. It was nice to run around the city at 05.30 before the crowds began. Only the street sweepers about. Back to my normal run in the country today. Absolutely soaked and cold - in August- but very enjoyable. Keep at it, 30 mins will soon seem like a short run. Then you can start looking for a 5mile or 10k run. I reckoned that I had no real speed so my first race was the Wimbledon half-marathon, thinking that I could plod around behind the others. I was actually last to pass the start, but passed many hundreds to finish in 1hr 57. 12 mins faster the next year.0

WOW! Keeping going for 2 hours! That must have felt so good suffolk, to find out how you were doing in comparison to others.
That's not for me just yet though!
Once I'm comfortable running for 1/2 hour at a time I'll try myself at some local shortish race.
Hotspur, I've discovered I love running in the rain. Which is a good thing as it hasn't stop raining all week here. I came back home drenched this morning. A mix of rain and sweat... Mmmm lovely....0 -

I have massive calf muscles (from playing too much rugby when i was younger, and now I've started to get try and get fit again, my calves seize up and I get pins and needles in my toes and my feet sometimes go numb.
After speaking to one of the trainers in the gym, he suggested using a tennis ball. Get your calves relaxed where you can reach them (suggest sitting on a bed with them up behind you gently) then running the tennis ball all over the muscle.
When you find a bit of the muscle that is hard, or hurts excessivley go gentle, but try and grin and bare the pain to work it. After a couple of sessions of the massage, I now have no pain in the calves and can push harder and longer to keep my bpm up.
Get someone to check your technique (Preferabley a pro) aswell as this can be increasing the damage that you are doing.Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Arthur C. Clarke0 -
I love running in the rain. Went yesterday and it was fantastic and it cooled me down too.
Well I am on run 3 walk 1min. This is my second week doing this (the last week of the 10 week programme too) as I wasn't well last week.
Not sure how to progress now.
