Hi, just a quick one. Don't forget loss of electricity and the impact it can have on frozen and refrigerated food supplies. If you go over to the SHTF thread, they discuss canned food and long life stuff. And don't forget the cat fud‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ David Lynch.

Hullo peoples
Hope youre all well and good..
Thrifty what a beautiful classy looking dress! You must be chuffed to bits to get the dress you always wanted at such a great price :j
Dolly well done on reducing your debt!
And so it was a spend day yesterday as planned. Didnt go and check out Aldee in the end! I decided to split my shopping between A$da and Te$co after basing my shopping list on My$upermarket prices.. I managed to get a friend who regularly shops at Aldee to pick up some honey and flaked almonds on my behalf as they were cheapest there so savings all round
I did find that some of the on line prices were mis represented and some of the 'offers' werent on offer or werent available because not all stores hold the same products! I didnt do too badly with my shopping experience and apart from the heartbreak of losing an onion, every purchase I made was the cheapest I could find plus I managed to get 68p off my next shop at Te$c
I spent a good few hours at the library yesterday afternoon catching up on the Sunday papers and reading a few frugal type money saving books. I was quite surprised at how much I have learnt about frugal living over the last year and a half! I had quickly figured out for myself the basics of tackling debt after my  but this site and particularly these challenges have honed my skills to perfection
Today I am going to be looking for accommodation. I made the decision to rent out my house a few years ago so that I could downsize and rent cheaper accommodation and in making that strategic move I created more expendible income which enabled me to become debt free a lot quicker . I have been sharing with others to date but Im starting to feel an urge to find a place of my own so I can have more space, and of course this comes at a price..... which challenges my new found frugal mindset. Why pay more when you can save! When I think of the extra I would need to pay for a quieter life, I am outragedI have an overwhelming need to downsize and lead a simpler way of life in my own gaff and have been looking into the idea of alternative living such as motor homes, narrow boats and park homes which really appeals. Much research has been done but I am still undecided. I feel there is an opportunity here to realise this dream but I think it will take time to materialise..
Anyhoo! think I'll put the kettle on and give my over active mind a rest! If anything I am hoping to bag a SFD

I had a friend who lived on a narrow boat and watching her lifestyle really made me aware of all the resources we use and completely take for granted. Her mooring wasn't serviced, so no electricity, no running water, no sewage (but serviced moorings incur council tax, so swings and roundabouts). She had water tanks which she filled from a stand pipe on the tow path, fuel deliveries came by boat for her diesel engine/generator, a couple of solar panels on the roof of the boat and that was it. Very low impact, and when things are good it's a blissful way to live; beautiful surroundings; sat on the top of her boat in the sunshine with some cheap bubbly. But when the weather's bad, can it can be hard work. When we had those really cold winters a couple of years ago and the canal froze, she almost ran out of fuel and all the stand pipes froze so no water for a week. Still, I did seriously think about moving into one myself, before I bought my flat.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have family friends who live near San Fransisco. They have an earthquake survival kit that they keep in their garage with meals and water for 3 days, clothes and blankets. They maintain it checking through for expired produce on a regular basis.
The most I have is a warning triangle and a hi-vis jacket in my car :rotfl: might have a think about upping my supplies though.Total debt: [STRIKE]£9473.62[/STRIKE] £7,384.87 22% PAIDTAF #25 NSD 8/12 | Food £43.45/£50 | eBay 0/20 | Exercise 5/18:T Proud to be Dealing with my Debt :TDFD: June 20150 -
Well trying to get over the shock of having another wet and windy day in the southwest! Good news - friend produced a little girl - all doing well.
I had the dental hygenist this morning - now that is one sadistic job - lovely lady but OUCH!
Anyways - twigged that of the little people we are seeing this weekend 5 of them will have birthdays in the next 3 weeks so went to Mr T's and got the pressies sorted so saved on postage which is good and makes me looks super organised to boot!
In Lagl cottage valentines has come early as we are spending friday night in the car! YS fish cakes for starters, ys rump steak with bits from the freezer/stores, yS pots au chocolat for pud. £6.04 for three courses - cheaper than our usual M&S/takeaway!!
Anyway work to try and get my head around before the munchkins land home in just over an hour!!
OOOh re stockpiling - I did have a large bar of chocolate from the shopping - however it may now be necessary to replace this in the stockpile

Re Zombies I was going to mention power lines going down (and knock on effect on freezer supplies) but well done short bird for getting there first. Also applies to Tiptoes DB - you have your oil but does it have an electric switch/timer to make it come on/off. We have gas CH but was no use when our electric went off after DS3 was born- thankfully the man who came to fix the washer (wasn't washer at fault) phoned the electric board and demanded they send someone out before nightfall (unlike my OH - now ex - who went off to work 300 miles away leaving me to deal with the flooded kitchen (I thought the washing machine had stopped and opened the door), newborn baby and 2 other under 5s.
Stewby you are not alone - I switched to starting my Christmas preparations by stocking up on soap, toilet rolls and cat food on the grounds that they wouldn't use more toilet roll just because we had it (whereas they found biscuits etc even if I hid them in my knicker drawer or the back of the wardrobe ) and the cats hadn't worked out how to use the can opener (although DS1s cat did learn to open the cupboard door and put the packet of dry food in the middle of the kitchen floor if he thought DS1 and gf were forgetting to feed him, he also raised the alarm when their rented cottage got flooded). I finally resorted to wrapping all presents big and small, as soon as they were bought, in coded paper (1 pattern and 1 plain per boy) and because they didn't know who they were for or what they might be (could have been something boring for grandma) they started leaving them alone. Only left the receipts to hide - they caught on early to the itemised till receipt - they didn't need to see something, if it was on a receipt they knew I had it.My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage0 -
Sorry for the lack of check in folks - am going to trudge home in the rain, do some washing, then wash me, then settle with you all in front of a few hours of TLC if you don't mind. Afternoon everyone
How are you all? I'm still here, just! I'm currently camped out at my friend's house - my street's been flooded and my house, so far, has escaped - I propped up the sandbags, elevated all my stuff and abandoned ship before we were evacuated! I know it's serious stuff but I'm having an absolute ball!! Staying up late chatting, laughing, eating, drinking then sleeping til noon! About to head home for a look before i return here for more chats, laughs and late nights!
I've had to take a few days off work so my purse will suffer next month, but it's a one off and the alternative is to stay at home waiting for the water to invade and the electricity to stop!
Hope everyone else is not too badly affected.
Right, off to look for the military men that have been deployed in my area and grab my blender - I'm missing my green smoothies
Stay safe everyone!0 -
LAGL - good news about your friend.
Siouxsie - every cloud and all that. Hope your house is OK though. We have been lucky here, we don't flood but the wind is really bad today and getting stronger.Debt Free and now a saver, conscious consumer, low waste lifestyler

My word Siouxsie! How awful! I've been thinking a lot about those affected by the flooding, my heart goes out to you all. We've been lucky here, a few fence panels have come down in the wind and it sounds horrid out there but we haven't had anywhere near what some folks have had.
We aren't terribly well organised for a major zombie apocalypse unless we boarded up down stairs and lived upstairs but got all the camping gear out of the garage first so we had gas, got some battery powered fairy lights and candles and glow sticks for light.Squirrelling away in September No 33It's not about the money, it's about financial freedom, being in control of it and living in the natural world and not a material world0 -
So.... nightshift number 2 completed and two more to go (one of them is an extra so more pennies from that in March).
Made slow cooker lasagne last night and the plan is to eat some of it today. I hope it's worked as I am starving.
Spend-free day number 8 today so we are over halfway. Hooray!!
Hope everyone is still doing well.
