    Hi all...

I'm now feeling *totally* like I'm running to catch up! I think everyone that has posted owns a house bar Kat and me ha ha... and I'm 41! I'm *still* renting, although will be debt free this year...

I'm a 41 year old single gay guy living in Somerset. I'm single by choice so I can't complain too much... but it is hard when you only have one income to pay for everything... Still - lots of single people do do it...

The thing is... I don't know where I want to settle, and the idea of being tied to one place/person I find hard... You think I have commitment issues?!?! Ha ha! I'll re-look at things when I'm debt free as more options will open up I'm sure...

Fed up of all the rain now! I need some sunshine to cheer me up!!! Failing that - the twin pack of 24 jaffa cakes I bought yesterday for £1.00 will do just fine!!!

    :)

To be honest, you're not necessarily worse off being single. If I were on my own I wouldn't have nursery costs, would have no car, a cheaper house, leccy and grocery bills would be way lower (heating would be off and I would eat wilder combinations of food to make do, rather than trying to produce appealing grub ;). And the list goes on...:rotfl::rotfl: So in my case from a financial point of view being in a relationship and having a child makes no sense :A, not that I would want to change :D

Abundant, I have to agree with thrifty - being single can have its advantages.

If I were single I'd spend a lot less money on food as Hubby prefers certain brands. I wouldn't have ended up in so much debt (possibly no debt) as I'd have lived within my means instead of galavanting around on nights out and holidays and throwing it all on a CC.

Then again, if I'd stayed single, I too would be renting (or living with mum and trying to save up) as I'd not be able to afford a mortgage . I also wouldn't have this great job which pays £4k more than my previous and helped to get me out of debt quicker.

    Swings and roundabouts, I guess.

I love my life how it is now though :)
  • Yep Abundant and as a girl trying to sell her house so she can buy another trust me there a defo benefits from being in rented!! You are what is known as proceedable when you do come to buy - would probably avoid the somerset levels though :(

Kat - Im not sure zone 7 counts as the xxxx end of nowhere - maybe we should do a poll on distance to nearest shop - ours is 5 miles - unless you count the egg box by the village hall!

you are right is doesn't really but in comparison to where I work it certainly seems like it! ;-)

  • :) I used to work in an office on the outskirts of London and frequently had to go "up to town" as some of my colleagues called it. It seems like a lifetime ago now. It used to take me an hour and half to get to the office in the first place via Clapham J each day as it was. Anyway - a bit like childbirth - I seem to have "forgotten" much of the joy of that time and am now a happy bumpkin :) This time next year you will be in the middle of a much bigger journey which will be amazing!

A little read for you all...

Right! With this in mind I am making lists tonight. It was fun packing up all my food to see what I had but I am determined to do the same as this lady - I am going to calculate my beans out with carrots etc and see what my little beany/rice meal comes to per portion.

OOOOOh determination is creeping back - need to get back to basics and make more little burgers from Jack Monroe's site as well....

EDIT... Total for an indivual bowl of rice and black beans is roughly = £0.57p. With onions from Lidls, organic carrots from Tesco, tinned toms and Tesco EDV rice. Considering the 89p for a massive bunch of corriander to go on my pineapple salse which is 32p for %40g (4 servings) I think I am doing ok. Just need a bit more variety now.Ha ha!

Feeling very virtuous as have just sold some second hand stuff - was only £20 but still that's £20 that will be deducted off my debt!!! Hoorah!

Points taken re. coupledom vs singledom!

It's a bit of a contentious subject I guess which I'm going to give a wide berth now ha ha!!! ;)

Stewby I am sorry to be so open here but I have to ask are you a boy or a girl - it's driving me mad. I don't know why I want to know but nothing gives you away and I am curious - don't worry if you don't want to say. I am just being a super nosey mare...:p

Oh I love this question. It made me realise how much I feel I know you all. I have images in my head of what you all look like. Stewby has shiny brown hair and a really pretty face. In my head, she's definitely a girl :D

My work is (almost) done for the day. I went to a daytime yoga class and did a spot of work while I was in town. Now I'm home for a late lunch and I'll head out for a quick job later. Hoping to do a spot of tidying up later as well and throwing out some more clutter. There was a letter through the door to say the bin men won't be coming tomorrow as the road's flooded (it's been closed all week. I can't leave the house without my wellies and we're ankle deep in water in the street!!)

Also in the mail was my First Direct welcome letter! Hurrah, they've opened an account so I should get my free £100 and a £250 interest free overdraft :D I love free money!!!!!
