I can't imagine you would be made to feel 'welcome' if you went to a wedding (in a church or otherwise) if you hadn't been invited. If seats were limited as they often are and you invited yourself this may mean an 'invited guest' such as close family or friends wouldn't get a seat! Can't see you being Mr/Mrs Popular in that situation! So it may be correct that everyone who wants to attend can, doesn't mean you should.

It would have to be a very small church and or a very large wedding to not have space for extra people.

A castle near here allows 20 people in total, including those that will be standing (registrars, bride and groom, bridesmaids etc).
Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman

Not really, the church at the end of my Road only has 6 pews each side, so 12 in total, really wouldn't take many to fill them. Many village churches are very small and wouldn't hold that many guests.

Er, no. They don't usually sit down!

Indeed, I was married at Gretna and that venue was tiny! Hardly room to swing a cat, I know just me and my wife's family wouldn't fit in, never mind friends etc. Luckily it was only the 2 of us and 2 witnesses from the local pub so not an issue.

In that case, I expect most people will just use their brains and wait to go to the evening reception, or stand outside at the end to see the bride and groom come out.

Bridesmaids, best man, father of the bride etc. do normally have seats, they only need to stand up for a bit. I've never been to a wedding where they stood up the whole time, It'd be weirdly distracting!

They probably didn't have seats due to the masses just turning up without an invite just because they can!!

I think you overestimate the appeal of watching other people get married!
