Yep - surely that's the crux of the issue here :T :T

It's up to the individual if they wish to abstain from PMs, but I don't see the issue with changing their personal settings to allow PMs for 2 or 3 BGs only (unless as Moneybot says, one of those lovely BGs are sending naughty PMs! lol :rotfl:)

Alternatively, don't bother to post 'Dupe', but then that seems to fly against the whole 'we're in this together' philosophy I thought was part and parcel of the MSE comping community :D

You forgot the HTH Good luck everyone ;)

Not at all, although I have received some about "banking" all day from another member

I choose to have pm's switched off completely, that's my choice and nobody's business but mine.

If it's a problem that I post that a comp is a dupe and add the link to stop people duping themselves then I'll stop. There really isn't a problem here :)

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Indeed if you don't want to send pms for merge requests that is entirely up to you.

Given the number of people on the boards most duplicate competitions get spotted sooner or later so I don't think one less person posting merge links makes that much difference.

I am now wondering which board member is a banker however...

Oh I think you can guess, I could always forward the pms :rotfl:
Oh, hang on a minute :p

Hmmm I think my guess might have their pms switched off though...

Just to say I wasn't saying anyone 'had' to allow pm's to BGs, or that if they have pm's turned off they shouldn't point out dupes :)

I was just pointing out that the option is there to restrict pm's from all members apart from those on your contacts list, maybe I should have worded it like that :)

Sorry, FF, I was referring to this one from last week:
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=64466216&postcount=5

    It's a difficult thing:
On the one hand, it's great to have dupe spotters, on the other, sometimes it does get frustrating that the dupe spotters seem to outnumber the dupe merge requesters. But, it is each to their own, about whether they post merges / turn on PMs, etc etc.

I imagine some just don't have time, with the amount they post comps etc, or perhaps are just dashing out the door, so only give a 'heads up', not a link.

The most annoying bumps for me are when someone bumps to say "Think this is a dupe", yet haven't taken the time to look for the thread that it is a dupe of... (I don't mind the "think this is a dupe, but searched and can't find it" messages - they're more useful).

Just in case LO spots this - I know they are avoiding the CCC, but how else to notify someone of this issue?

Thread here has just fallen into GO as person who spotted it was unable to PM the OP due to PMs switched off

    (wow, that was a lot of abbr.s !!! ;))

Hope I haven't offended anyone by adding to this thread, but this appears to be another issue when people switch their PMs off, NOT that I'm telling LO or anyone else for that matter  what they should do

HTH -- happy comping everyone! ;):D

I think this just reiterates the need to bump a thread to indicate problems with formatting, etc. I've added info to LO's comps before, and (s)he always checks the threads they post.

Usually, I put a note on the thread re formatting issues, and also PM, unless I know it's someone without their PMs switched on. I know others think it unnecessary/annoying when I put a note on the thread if there is incorrect formatting etc, but for the reason biker_chick points out, there is a need...
