I've noticed because they are spotting merges and asking if someone else can pm the merge to a Board Guide

so a question to the above members

is there any reason why you can't add the comps BGs to your contact list and set your private messaging for contacts only?

To do what Glad suggests you need to click on User CP towards the top of the screen.

Apologies for the small screenshot:

1) is where you set up your contacts - just add their usernames.

2) is where you control the messaging

3) needs to be ticked to allow PMs

4) needs to be ticked to restrict who you can send you a PM

Thank you for that suggestion. I must admit I do get a tad irritated when you see a dupe has been spotted and a merge hasn't been requested. Fair enough if the person doesn't know how but otherwise why are you bothering to dupe spot if you aren't doing anything about it?

Because a lot of the time here its like walking on eggshells as it is and I think a lot of people don't bother anymore. I've spotted many dupes and asked for someone to request a merge. Would have no idea what to put in a PM to someone about merging threads. We bother to dupe spot because it allows someone who does know what to put in a merge pm to notice it faster than having to look it up themselves. Do you put the url's of both threads in the pm? If someone said here we'd do it.

I am new here, but have always felt okay about notifying re: a merge...

I just request a merge over PM with either Dalkirst or Glad (I alternate! ), giving both posts' URLs, and then let them handle the merge...

This is how I request a merge -

Go to the bottom of the front page of the comps forum and click on either Dalkirst or Glad. Further click to send them a pm with the title Merge Request

I usually use the formula

"Could you please merge this post
(add url of duplicate post)

to the earlier post here
(add url of original post)

Thanks"

And send. That's all there is to it!

If you look here, it will show you exactly what to do

Basically, as others have said, just send a PM to one of the Board Guides, give them the urls of both comp posts and ask them to merge them together (I always say Please and Thanks too )

And, really importantly, post on the duplicate comp to say that you've sent the merge request and which Board Guide you've sent it to - that will stop the BG's getting swamped with duplicate merge requests !!

Sorry, I have to ask - if you think the How To is so good, why haven't you changed your settings?

I'm guessing you haven't as you are you still not sending PMs to request merges.....

Is there any need to start naming and shaming people? Just an idea but if you know this thread exists and see someone asking for a merge how about sending them a nice pm with a link to the thread asking them to do it themselves instead. Not everyone clicks on every thread so they may well have not seen this.
