Some people don't have dads as I said before. Well technically I do but he !!!!!!ed off out of my life a few decades ago.

The problem with tradition is that it doesn't suit everyone's circumstances. Some people might have lost one or both parents.

What are they supposed to do?

    .. Please don't be ridiculous.

There most certainly is. Even if the couple asked both sets of parents for permission the concept would be absurd. My parents do not own me and we've gone well past the era where daughters were a burden to be sold off to the highest bidder.

Exactly so go on insulting my views if you makes that happy. The traditional people are always vindicated but those with more liberal views are praised. Ironic really.

    Back on topic...
Are you in a financial position to get married?

I would say not, if the OH has opted for 3 years' finance on the ring.

If you are perfectly happy to perpetuate a tradition which views you as chattel to be bartered away from your father to your future husband then good look to you. Fortunately once you have been purchased your husband will no longer legally allowed to rape you, or perhaps you'd like to see a return to this barbaric "tradition" as well?

Would the people who view this tradition as a good thing abide by the father's decision if he said no? :)

You've lost the plot mate. It's a mark of respect now - in 2014 - as I said previously I doubt many people who then not propose if the father said no.

You've taken asking for the fathers blessing to legal rape - please reevaluate your life.

Where's the respect? If dad says no young fella-me-lad will do it anyway. Where's the partner's respect as an individual in her own right?!

What the hell are you talking about?! When I got engaged, I'm pretty sure no money changed hands.....:rotfl: My husband did not purchase me, there wasn't an ownership document to fill in to transfer ownership! :p

There's nothing wrong at all with a traditional proposal, and there's nothing wrong with a non-traditional one either....and there's nothing wrong with respecting other people's views either, even if you don't happen to agree with them.

Exactly, so what's the point in asking someone else for permission?
