What I find out of order (other than the fact that he didn't discuss the purchase) is that he spent £55 on a gift for a relative, yet got nothing for Victory for xmas.

The annoying thing is, all he needed to say was 'I've seen this great present for Great Aunt Mabel, it's half price but may be gone by payday, would we be really stretched if I get it?'

You'd have either replied, 'Oh go on, I know her ski gear is full of moth holes, we'll manage somehow' or 'Sorry love, we really, really can't afford it until payday'

All would have been calm in the Victory household and the dog wouldn't have to have fajitas for dinner.

Very true:D no dog;) OH happily eating his dinner:D

It's a difficult topic I think, how much you can spend without asking / discussing. I wondered about this the other day, as I'd ordered flowers for a friend's birthday and hadn't discussed it with my husband first. It was definitely more than either of us would usually spend on a friend, but I wanted to as she's been having a tough time and she'd told me it was a significant birthday.

Fortunately when I did mention it to my husband, he smiled and said that's nice. We're not in quite the same situation as victory though, we don't have debts but do budget pretty carefully to keep to that.

I can understand why you were shocked, I can also understand why your OH did it though. Perhaps it was partly to keep us an image with his relatives? Or maybe just for once he wanted to make a purchase without penny pinching. I'm not saying it was the right thing to do, but I can see how it happened. Hope you and he can both talk it through and work out how to avoid arguments about similar issues in the future.

  • Tbf, me and OH can spend what we like without consultation - I give him my share of bill money and that's it - the rest of our wages are ours.

Sooooooo much easier...though we don't have any kids.
