I'm in a similar position and have been very lucky to have been given a similar amount by my FIL, I've ummed & ah'd over what to do with it and have decided on spending £100 on swimming lessons for myself and the rest will be saved for next years season ticket at NFFC0

I'm with you 100% on the experience rather than the 'stuff' so I'd be going for a holiday. I love European city breaks but have also enjoyed some great ones in this country. To an extent it does depend on what interests you.
Three I've recently enjoyed:- Lisbon, loads to see in the city and a short train ride to Sintra added to it
- Verona, where (fictionally) Romeo and Juliet is based. Lovely city but can do day trips to Venice and Lake Garda easily plus Vicenze where Palladio came from.
- Edinburgh, I flew there from the South but you could probably save by driving. Again loads to do and if you're happy with a B&B type place rather than a 5* you'll get plenty for your money
