Haven't had chance in the last few years as we now have a toddler but we used to go to places like Rome/Florence/Sicily for a week. Thompson City Breaks were actually better value for money than sorting out separate flights/hotel/transfers. Don't go to Italy in July or August unless you want to know what your turkey felt like in the oven a few weeks ago!

If you are already planning a summer holiday why not use the money to upgrade your hotel/room or to go on a nice excursion or an activity you wouldn't normally try. I surprised my husband for his birthday one year (while we were on hols) with a cage dive with white sharks - the operators sent him down a second time as a 'treat' when I told them what day it was!

For me either a London weekend, have dinner see a show stay overnight, maybe do some shopping or museums depending on how much I had left. Otherwise I'd love to visit Scotland maybe see how much it would be to go to the Edinburgh festival.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I would definitely use it for a holiday or short break.

I know someone suggested Northumberland and it really is lovely up there. I have been there a few times with my dog and the beaches are gorgeous, stretch for miles and most allow dogs on all year round.

There are lots of places abroad too that I want to go back to. Prague I have been to twice (9 years ago and about 20 years ago). I was disappointed the second time in how commercialised and expensive it had become. It's still a beautiful city though. Other cities I have liked are Berlin, Barcelona, Antwerp, Bruges.

Holland is a lovely country with friendly people and some great places to visit - Leiden, Delft, The Hague are all great. Not quite so keen on Amsterdam.

Belgium is another great country and I can never understand why more Brits don't visit. The coast is lovely, again with miles of gorgeous beaches - Westende, Middelkerke, De Haan. Ghent is nice as is Antwerp. If you can get a cheapish ferry to France, the drive to Belgium is very short.

Again, another poster has suggested a weekend in London and as love going to London I would also agree with this. You could get a reasonably priced hotel (Travelodge maybe) or an apartment, see a show, have a nice meal, also maybe something life afternoon tea in one of the good hotels.

I wouldnt bet on that in Prague, it was quite expensive when we went a few years ago. 2 coffees in Wenslas' square cost us £18!

You went to the wrong cafe then! Go see the sights then walk a street or two away and the prices are more reasonable :)

I'd go to the Eden project, and Kew gardens.

Any left, a nice meal with friends.

Have fun spending it, and let us know where you go / what you do.

  • I'd spend it on a "zookeeper for a day" experience, High Tea at Fortnums and either festival or gig tickets. We go to Rewind 80s festival, which for £110 for 4 days camping plus about 15 acts, is really good value.

I would defo go on a city break. Although I would be tempted to go to London and have a really nice hotel, see a show and have some spends. But that's just me. Trains arent too bad from Leeds either (presume you're Scarboro/ Filey way?) so coujld go on the train and treat you and hubs to a bottle of bubbles to be extravegant on the way and have some couple time x

You need to do more research before travelling..
We spent £300 on 4 days eating and drinking like kings, including drinking in one of the best 10 coctail bars in the world (as suggested by The Times and New York Times) and having every single meal in a restaurant, no Tesco sandwich involved. This is for 2 people.

There definiely are rip off places though... tripadvisor forum and asking the locals before travel is your best bet.

Can you really do a city break for £500? Wow!

No problem! That is usually my top budget for city break..
  • How about going down to London for afternoon tea at the Ritz then going to see a show at in the West End. You could also stay a night in a posh hotel.

    Have fun spending it :-)
