If you want to stay in the UK then I'd suggest going to Bath for the Christmas markets and treat yourself to a spa session as floating in the heated waters of the open air roof top pool is wonderful. I also really enjoyed a chocolate making class and climbing over the O2 roof. Go karting with friends, a city break to Edinburgh or a driving holiday to Ireland.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!
  • Wow some more lovely suggestions thank you.

  • I'd go to London for the weekend. When we go we love going to the theatre, or maybe catch a gig or a comedian. There's loads to see or do apart from the obvious shopping, such as the London Eye, some really cool bars, tours etc.

If it was more than £500, then I'd be booking to go to Vegas! :D

You say you already have savings. How would you feel about adding to the £500? Then you could have a week's holiday rather than 2-3 days.
    . . .I did not speak out

    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
    To speak out for me..

That's a good idea but we had planned to have a summer holiday later on in the year. I know that if I don't plan to do something with this money it might get eaten up on meals out etc which is lovely but I want it to be for going away. We have had a pretty stressfull 2013 so we want 2014 to be for us. Our boys are at an age where we can leave them to look after themselves so we want to start making our own memories as well as family memories because we still do plenty with the boys.

It's possible to get a week's holiday for two for less than your £500.

Out of curiosity, I've just checked Thomas Cook http://www.thomascook.com/lp/1xf-cheap-holidays/

I chose them purely because we've just booked a holiday with them, but if they're doing holidays in that price range, other places will too.

I would book a mini cruise for you and your oh, it am going on one at the end of the year to Bruges Xmas markets with p&o for £199 for 2 nights pp it includes all food/entertainment etc. we went on one last year for the first time and loved how easy it was (I am 38 btw, I know they often seem popular with older people :D).

A mini-cruise is a great idea for the money available, especially if you haven't been on a cruise ship before. The positive is that everything is included, food, entertainment, etc, and the only extras are booze, which on P&O are at pub prices.

There is one available now on P&O Aurora going on 13 June, visiting Guernsey, for £229. Might be just the thing.

The problem is that £500 isn't actually a huge amount of money, especially in an expensive location. Places like Prague, Lisbon & Porto are great venues and very cheap, whereas Paris, Rome and even Bruges can eat up your budget very quickly.

I wouldnt bet on that in Prague, it was quite expensive when we went a few years ago. 2 coffees in Wenslas' square cost us £18!

I heard a lot of people saying that when I went, and expected it to be pricey. Eating/drinking on the main squares was expensive (though Wenceslas Square isn't all that anyway IMO - all about the Old Town!), so we just avoided it. £5.50 for a 1.2 litre beer on Old Square! Sod that! Walked 100 yards to a nice pub and it was still two quid... sod that too! Walked round a corner and sat in a beautiful old pub and drank delicious dark beer for 75p.

I found Prague cheaper than Budapest (Which was itself cheap!), and about the same sort of price as places like Krakow. Averaged about a pound a pint, a fiver for a meal. Can't knock that!

Same as anywhere really. 14 Euros for a litre of beer on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, or walk round the corner and have a three course meal with wine for 8 euros.
